335d Slipping When Cold

With this cold weather recently i have noticed that when i first start my car in the morning for the first few minutes of driving it is like the clutch is slipping. I know the 335d is a torque covertor but just so you get what i mean.

Basically the car revs alot for the speed you are traveling, is this common or should i be booking it in to BMW?

Sounds like it could just be crafty german engineering to heat up the engine faster on cold days.

Interested in what other diesel owners have to say.

I have the same, especially when cold.

I keep telling myself it's the torque converter. Once warm the car 'locks' into the gears.
It can be painful at times when cold but I don't really press the loud pedal until the car is warm. It does feel like the clutch is slipping at times..

I have noticed this too in cold starts, and just assumed it was to get the engine nice and warm quicker.

Is it a cause for concern?

No cause for concern. This is the engine (and gearbox) undergoing it's cold start procedure, the idea being that if you can warm the engine up quicker, you may use more fuel/give out more CO2 in the short term, but will use less fuel/give out more CO2 in the long term. I think it's also has a secondary benefit in that it is better for the engine life too. A bit like driving the car to warm it up is better than leaving idling on your driveway.

Completely normal in colder weather, has been for several generations of autoboxes.

For the ZF 6-speed...

Quote:
Warming-up program
The warming-up program is activated after each engine start with the engine temperature lower than approx. 60°C. Up to a certain temperature, the automatic transmission remains in the output-orientated maps XE and XS during the warming-up program. Gear changes are only effected at higher engine speeds. This enables the engine and the catalytic converter to reach their operating temperatures more quickly.
Up to a transmission oil temperature of approx. 35°C, the converter lockup clutch is neither controlled nor closed.

I'm always super-interested in your contributions.. thanks

but, what does that mean? If it's not controlled, or closed (locked?) what is it doing? Just what it pleases? lol

If that makes sense!

Thanks. Phil

The TCC in the ZF 6HP series is not an on/off lockup, as previous auto gearboxes. It has the ability to be engaged and released in steps, a gradual function to prevent the abrupt feel of an on/off clutch. The TCC solenoid is controlled by pulse width modulation to regulate oil flow and pressure. So when the engine/gearbox is cold the TCC is neither in controlled (step mode) or engaged (closed).

Cheers. That makes sense now.

What causes this variable clutch to be a bit abrupt when its in the cold warm up cycle but work perfectly when warm?

From my understanding there isn't an issue with the stepped lockup clutch hot or cold, it is just left open to help heat the engine and gearbox.

The older on/off design could feel a bit strange, if you didn't know what was happening. In fact some have commented it even felt it was another gear, when the 5-speed would engage the lockup in 5th, and revs would drop a few hundred revs.

Good to have this confirmed. I was wondering this yesterday but had assumed it was not a fault.
