Euro delivery -- how is trade-in handled?

We are toying with ordering a new 135i for European delivery, and would probably want to trade the '08 335i as part of the deal. How is that handled, given that it's 8-10 weeks to the west coast from dropoff date in europe? We would not want to be without a car for a couple months after we got back.

You'd likely be paying for both cars until the ED cars arrives back in the states. Then you'll complete the trade. You can also do ED with leases as I've done three tmes now. On my last one the dealer's used car department purchased my old car which saved me thousands in excess mileage and other return charges. Once you try ED you'll love it. Good luck.

Typically you don't start paying for the Euro Delivery until you get it as they give you a few months before your first payment, but there could be a little overlap, otherwise, you just take your trade in when you pick up your Euro Delivery stateside (worst case you may end up with 1 payment before you get the car back in the US if it is a bit slow getting to you).

All I can say is do it - was a great experience, either saves you a little money or gives you a free vacation with the savings. Munich is awesome with Welt and the factory tour/museum. So much to see close by and the driving is great in the area. It is worth the trip even if you just make it a long weekend!

I actually just did this (still waiting on my car, in fact).
10 to 29 days before delivery of your car at the BMW Welt Center, you have to go sign the purchase papers. That can't be done until the car has a VIN, so it has to be that close. At the time of signing the papers they want the trade-in vehicle. As I understand it this is because they give you a set amount for the trade and if you drive it for a few more months and crash it, then "their car" that you were driving lost value.

I took it to the end and went with 10 days before pick-up in Munich. We spent a week in Germany, then 6 weeks so far waiting for it to get back here.

The single car thing isn't easy, but I would say the trip was worth it!

Best of luck with it!

The dealer bought my old car when my new ED car was redelivered. We negotiated the purchase amount when we signed the PO.

My dealer gave me both options, I could trade when I signed the papers, or I could trade when I picked up the new car for slightly less money.

As it happens, what they offered me in trade was silly, so I sold it privately. They offered $12K on an '08 Saab 9-3 SportCombi that I sold privately in a week for $18K. Can't blame them for trying, I guess. That was about six months before my expected re-delivery, so I picked up a Volvo 945 for $1500 to use as a daily driver in the meantime. Cheap and cheerful, and I recently sold it for more than I had in it.

As to the payment schedule, I signed the papers on 7/1 for a 7/29 delivery, my first payment was due 8/9, which was actually while I was in Europe with my car. Dropped off on 8/11 in Amsterdam, re-delivery was 9/26.
