I guess it also depends where you are in NJ....JP lives in the sticks and says he couldn't get to work w/o it on some days

Depends on if you have space to store winter/summer setup.
XI with all seasons or I with winter/summer setup.

Who's this JP guy, you are referring to?

To the OP: I'd say just go with i. You'll have more fun. And if anything, just get winter tires for the snow.

driven both an i or an Xi, the handling in both stock is awful. both require coilovers to really enjoy them.

the xi is actually a good awd system, which is alot to say considering BMW had sucked w/their awd system compared to Quattro in recent years.

i like the xi, since I take my cars on trips. I like knowing that I can get out of any situation given the right amount of clearance and proper tires. That just gives me more reassurance as the 335i w/xDrive is my DD.

but in terms of handling - the I and xi stock set up is far from good. both require coilovers. i have a set of kw v1 just waiting for me in the living room, but i need to order camber plates and a stud kit, before putting the coils in. i drove a 335i w/kw v1, and it needed a few more tweaks to really be a great handling car (a sway bar, and a square set up --- there is too much understeer built into these cars) .

go with the XI. with coilovers, it will be out-handle a I. and my gas mileage is fine, 24mpg - and i do 65/35 (highway/street) driving

Get the i..... the xi is like having training wheels, any good driver should be able to make it through the snow with good tires.

It's not like NY/NJ gets an absurd amount of snow anyway...

Go for the I. NJ snow is laughable at best, we might get one or two serious snow storms a year, and in those times my snow tires have been more than adequate. I am actually surprised at what kind of stuff I have gotten through. Besides, when you find those empty parking lots with a little snow then RWD is much more fun as well.
