335d 1/4 mile

Finally managed to find a dry day and head up to the local 1/4 mile track to see what the 335d was really like on full pelt.

I must say after driving a lot of 1/4 mile runs in numerous fast manual cars I found the auto box quite frustrating.

I was mostly low 14s for most of the day with rubbish slow launches jumping on the accelerator when the lights changed. Traction control off but it didnt feel right or getting the power down when changing gear at full throttle (does it slow the change if it senses it might loose traction??)

Anyway, by the end of the day I managed to get down to a 13.6 at 106mph (running on the standard run flat gripless tyres) That was a 2.3sec 60ft time

Anyone got any useful 1/4 mile tips or had any issues?
I ended up having to launch in 2nd with left foot breaking to get some decent launches with a bit of slip and slide rather than lag or no go.

Is 13.6 fair on RFTs or should I be trying harder

I am sure Carlos will be along in a minute too.

Also (I'm sure you know this), auto boxes use a torque convertor instead of a clutch (though, and I'm not sure about this, the torque convertor may have a lock-up clutch too).

Perhaps this is why you feel you're getting bogged down??

Hi mate,

Nice one on getting the 335d down the strip.

With 106trap I presume you are tuned. Standard traps 100-101.
Tuned 105-106

Your 2.3 60ft shows the launch is not great.

They car can be launched much harder than you think. How were you launching buddy?!

2nd gear is not quicker in my experiance. You need first gear really.

launching in 2nd with the breaks full on reving it a little.

Do you ever rev it in neutral then fire it into gear so that you can choose the revs? or is that a gearbox breaker?
I found the 1st gear launch wasnt going anywhere but maybe I just need to adapt my style.

Toxic, I didnt really know about the torque converter. This is my first auto. Take it that its totally differnt to a clutch? So maybe that was why I didnt feel like it was kicking in on gear change as quick as im used to

What kinda 60ft times can you get in the 3series? Whats your best ever time Carlos?

Evil, You want to launch 1st gear brake boosting. Dont ever rev and then slam from Neutral to drive you will break it.

T/C off, warm tyres etc and it should have grip, will wheelspin some but its manageable.

60ft's 1.8-2.0

1/4mile 13.0-13.2

The car is not changing any slower to on the road, just your expecting more from it so it seems slower that what it really is.

Feels quicker slamming through a manual for sure, does not always mean it is.

Nice thread!
Carl, are you aware if anyone managed to squeeze high 12s from a remapped 335d on 1/4 mile?

I haven't had the chance to test mine yet (because I don't have where) but IF I'll get the same results as Carl, I'll be more than happy

Yeah, really? I do really like the 330d 6cyl growl at full tilt, but would have thought 335d would sound the same (or do the 2 turbo's change the note)?

turbos

I believe the 335d has 2 turbos but 1 works at low revs and one at high revs. As on of them hands over to the other then I'd expect the engine note to be the same as the 330d, only 1 turbo is working at a time.

Won't ever sound as good as the aston martin v8 vantage I drove today (one of the those drive a supercar round a track abit jobs) but it does have its own "truck" like prowess

First person into the 12s with a 335d should get some kind of an award. Carlos is soooo close.
