A lot of the italian cars use a flat plan crank for the firing causing the sound change.

Flat crank shaft

this is all. The high high end cars use a flat crankshaft giving you the sound of 2 inline 4's out of their v8

this is why ferrari and lambo v8 sound different from american v8's

Dude briggs and straton makes a good engine. Whats wrong with that?

You're right though, 911 carrera engine sounds like a dirty metallic mechancial sound...yet people love it; not to mention it looks like an ugly ass frog...yet it still tops my list of affordable driver's cars.

That or I'll have to spring for a 458 when I end up in Cali. But for image alone R8 >> 911...then when you realize there is no substitute you go for the ugly frog.

Well, for certain definitions of "affordable".

To me nothing can beat the sound of a V10 such as the Carrera GT. A higher revving V10/V12 with smaller cylinder bores than a V8 will always cause it to sound higher pitched in a good way. I don't mind the RS4 exhaust note as far as v8's go, but in no way do I care about the ugly rumbly V8s like that Corvette and the C63. I think the C63 sounds unrefined and stupid. Even the M3 V8 is so much smoother sounding.

A V8, V10 or V12 engine does not sound like any motorcycle, no matter the exhaust. It's different. And why ask this question? Do we all expect a Ferrari F430 to sound like a 335? It sure as hell had better not.

Agree completely! Afterall, many of the better sounding engines are V8 or larger including F1 cars. Can not really compare in my opinion.

For our 335i I still like the Meisterschaft GT and Eisenmann Race exhaust the best of all the ones out there. Just my 0.02

Meisterschaft GT:

and this one compares it to stock (stock is first in video)

Eisenmann Race:

and this one

That Carrera GT sounds pretty cool, I have to admit! And the engine revs so fast, it's incredible!

Go to a F1 race, and stand on the outside of a corner as they exit and go thru 2nd 3rd and 4th gears, in 6 seconds, and then go to a Moto GP race, do the same, whiny motorcycles?

I have never been a fan of Ferrari engine notes.. I like high strung motors but not that high.. something like V10 M5 or Lamborghini 5.2

I know, but I thought we were comparing supercars to motorcycles?

Look up the difference between flat plane and cross plane cranks

explains why some exotics have whiny v8's despite having decent displacement (ferrari), and some tiny v8's sound rumbly despite being well... tiny

essentially the rumbly v8 that everyone likes so much comes as a result of inefficient exhaust scavenging because of the cross-plane crank

flat plane v8's sound like two i4's bolted together, high pitch and raspy. But due to the lack of counterweights on the cranks and better exhaust scavenging, they are capable of more power and are more rev-happy (less rotating mass).

anyway, just thought i'd share

most v8's are cross plane btw, because its easier to make a cross-plane last a long time (less balance issues)

off topic but i really dont like the sound of L6, although i have 335i. It sounds like 4 cylinder. V6 sounds way better.

Talking motorcycle sounds, eh?

This could very well be my next ride.

Listen from 1:10 on. The earlier bits are the guy reviewing the bike.

+1 . I thought it would degenerate into a flame war.

Personally, I like both exhaut notes. I'm partial to the high pitch sound as I've been an F1 fan for decades. I think the new 458 sounds great. However, I really like the R8, C63 sounds as well.

Disagree. The I6, and BMW's I6 in particular, has a very distinctive growl that sounds way better than any V6 I've ever heard. Just listen to this beauty from the Getaway in Athens spinoff:

V6 sounds more deep and L6 sounds like a strong 4 cylinder engine. Although i own 335i, i really dont like how it sounds in high rev
