Intermittent Oil burning smell/Smoke with new turbos

I had my turbos replaced under warranty less than a year ago. I am no longer under warranty and have recently started noticing smoke and an oil smell when I come to a stop. This happens on rare occasions and does not necessarily happen when I am getting into boost as I have thought that may provoke it but it does not. I know it may be the turbo seals but are there any other possibilities? It never does it until it at least 120 degrees. When it does it it can let out alot of smoke but it only does it for a few seconds and then stops. I am xxxless but can differ between fuel and oil smell. I am just looking for any experience or ideas that anyone may have.

is the smoke coming out of one side of the exhaust, is smoke coming out by the left side (passenger side) of the motor? Color of smoke? Does it go away when accelerating.

The smoke is a bluish white and clearly smells of oil. It comes from both exhaust banks equally. ANd yes it goes away when accelerating. I have had people ride behind me to see if it leaves a smoke trail. MY car does not leave a smoke trail which makes me think it is something other then turbos.

possibly a crankcase pressure issue, replace valve cover get upgraded RB valve....you run a OCC?

Very doubtful, but I would get one, do a valve cover gasket replace and upgraded valve. How many miles on your car with these turbos? I had blown seals in my turbos, car would smoke if it sat....not while cruising. When I gave robbeck my cores there where really bad....worst he has seen lol!!

If yiu do a valve cover gasket I have a easy DIY.

Not even 10k miles. The thing that makes me think it is a pcv problem is that i get a small amount of oil that appears to come from my filler cap. I cant find where to get the upgraded pcv. It should be a pain to change.

upgraded valve is a 10 min job, but if the valve cover is leaking the PVC system is not operating correctly since the head breathe's into the valve cover (see pic below).

get the upgraded valve from RobBeck

When I had something similar happen, they replaced the valve cover gasket and also said that an oil line going to a turbo was leaking and dripping onto my exhaust. I was under warranty so they did all the work.

Your turbos are still under warranty, BMW extended to 85000 miles I think. Take back to dealer for inspection maybe.

Upon further inspection there seems to be no symptoms of a leaky valve cover.(no oiil rinning down the side of the block or any in the spark plug wells). I am thinking of ordering this upgraded valve and giving it a shot. Will probably order a bms catch can as well.

i am presently doing the turbo job because a have alot of smoke coming to a stop...but just when the car is hot...my turbos looks good on both side .no oil ..and the shaf play look fine too.... the car as 85k miles... could it be just the valve cover and pcv valve causing this ?...

i think i will do the the valve cover and pvc first. put back engine support ,dps and give it a try...

Could be valve stem seals

My buddy thought his car's turbos were blown for a long time. Started smoking at like 70k miles. At 99k he checked the (original) turbos, no oil found in them. These turbos made a very loud siren sound. Apon further inspection the turbos were made out to be 100% in working order even with the siren, and they found the stem seals to have crapped out. He would get smoke on deccel no matter what oil temp fully catless. When he put the cats back on their was no smoke.

o man.... another thing on the list for the cloud of smoke on deccel to verify.. damn

1- turbo seal -- most possible
2- pcv valve -- rb upgrade but no cure for smoke
3- vent hose -- no cure
4- valve cover gasket -- dosen't seem to fix the problem
5- valve stem seal -- second most possible
6- piston ring engine damage -- worst case senario

Just FYI, a BMS OCC made my car smoke. I too thought it was my turbos. When I pulled my OCC their was oil in the inlet line, none in the can. It was restrictive. Day after the OCC was removed I had zero smoke, go figure.

1 you can verify by pulling the DP's and checking for oil in your turbine housings.
2 and 3 I would just revert to completely stock OEM PCV components. When I removed my OCC I bought new OEM check valves to be sure.
4 and 5 are going to be a pain.
6 Do a compression/leakdown test to see if your cylinders are honding their compression. If a cylinder is down compared to the rest you may have a ring sealing issue.

Smoke is coming out of both exhaust ports i'm assuming, because you don't have divorced piping like an E90, rather an X-pipe. This makes it hard to determine which bank your smoke is coming from. With a PCV and valve stem issue it will be from both tips. If it's a ring sealing issue or turbo related it will be from one side most likely, unless both bank's components are shot.
