I'm just gonna say most shops won't be responsible if you don't OEM in. Make sure it has same specs and can handle your car. I paid 270 at some well trusted porsche/bmw/audi indy shop, and it came with 2 year shop warranty.

Why is that a stupid move? Costco batteries are made by Interstate. I am guessing if you get a Costco-Interstate with the same specs as the factory you should be fine.

The consensus seems to be that assuming you're replacing a worn out battery with a new battery of the same specs, and not registering it with the computer, that you're going to shorten the working life of the new battery.
The reason: as a battery ages the computer changes how it recharges it. If it's not told that there's a new battery in there, it uses the charging algorithm for an old worn out battery. I think it means it tends to overcharge it a bit. Not the end of the world. In fact, it would be interesting to figure out the break-even point--new battery installed DIY without registering = $$$, having to be replaced earlier by X years = $$$, but do you still come out cheaper than going to a dealer and spending Y $$$$ for a proper new battery install.
