check your prices again. a fully loaded 335i costs as much as a loaded s5--and the s5 is up market when compared to a 335i. the only reason the 335i has a lower base price is because you can get a 335i without real leather, autodimming mirrors, an alarm etc. while the s5 comes well equipped as a base model. your not gonna find an s5 with pleather

Why doesn't Audi drop the 3.0 supercharged engine from the S4 in the S5??

That weird because the S5 convertible has it.

i asked the SA why convertible has the 3.0 while the coupe has 4.2 V8. He says that the convertible is heavier then the coupe so instead having a heavy V8 engine, audi puts the 3.0 on the S5 convertible

Not always. You get a way better torque curve out of the 3.0T. Thats why the S5 feels so damn slow. The V8 has a horrible torque curve.

I saw an S5 at the dragstrip while I was there getting a few runs in. It was blowing the doors off a bunch of stock 4 cylinder cars and pickups with it's 14.5 time and 95 mph trap speeds. Not really what I expected. The car really does need the supercharged v6and a trip right over to APR for a tune.

Btw is the 4.2L on R8/Rs4 is something similar to the one on S5

To the poster that asked about the S5 being faster than the 335i coupe, there was a track test on the show Fifth Gear, and they are almost identical, though the BMW won by a hair, if you ran the race for 10 laps and changed drivers, it would be a toss up most likely. I think Audi should of aimed a tad higher to sandwich its performance between the 335i and M3. But its AWD, a feature thats heavy in comparison, but also more everyday driveability and ease of pushing its limits with a tad more security, which is a good thing...

my roommate has a 2.0t a5 s-line convertible and it is soooooo grainy sounding and slooowwwwwwwww. honestly, i will drive my 328xi (which is peppy but not the fastest obviously) and the 2.0 is overwhelmed by the weight of the car and buzzy... terrible. it is sad, because my friends wolfsburg 2.0t is smooth, fast and punchy. Audi's aren't all that great IMO

+1. I test drive the 2.0T and its sluggish, a lot slower then gti . I know a5 is heavier but i didnt expect it was that much slower

I drove an S5 cab recently. Looks attracted me to it for sure. Was glad to be in my 3 year old 335 coupe though at the end of the test drive. Once you load these babies up you are almost talking M3 money. No Audi for me in the near future...

Having driven an s5 for a few thousand miles...

Modded 335 >> S5 > 335 in terms of driving. I was extremely unimpressed with the 335 in stock form from a handling aspect. While it's definitely more direct than the s5 and a bit tighter if you will, it's infinitely less planted at speed and bumpstops like no other. The grip from the S5 is seemingly endless. It does understeer a bit when you approach the limit, but the 335 does too.

The s5 beats the 335 in terms of everything not related to drivers dynamics; although, I must admit, those recaros aren't very comfortable after a couple hours of driving. The thigh bolsters get pretty damn annoying when you're in cruise and want to rest your leg. The sound system is better, the electronics are more user friendly IMO, (although, I have the first generation of the E9x idrive, so i'm biased against it). Both cars have pretty shitty cupholders. The S5's glovebox is definitely smaller and the backseat is useless.

Never driven an s5 cab though. I'd imagine it's pretty awful to drive. That car is ridiculously heavy.

I don't know. Whenever I drive the S5 I definitely feel like i'm driving something that's nicer than my 335. It's probably pretty similar to the difference between an evo mr touring and a 335. One's a bit better of a drivers car, but one stands out as a nicer automobile. Not AS extreme, but similar (the mr touring feels much nicer than a regular evo, in case you've never been in one.)

The 2.0T engine stock is admittedly low on power as it is a 4 cylinder engine. Once it gets a APR tune your 328xi would have no chance and that would be a 4cylinder engine beating your 6.
It is the same with the 335i once tuned it is a lot faster. That is the beauty of FI compared to your NA 328 engine.
Don't mean to disrespect your 328xi but in tuned form the 2.0T is better while in stock form your 328 engine is better.
To give you an idea I have a B5 1.8T tuned engine and I raced a 330i with it stock and got blown away. I put it in the chipped/tuned mode and I beat the 330i by about 1 car length to the next light and he couldn't catch up either so it wasn't just the AWD as you might think. We pulled over at the next gas station to check under my hood to check if I had NOS but he was shocked that it was just a tune. The 335i guys will understand this more than the 328 guys.
Dead on. I completely understand the 2.0t has potential... but for paying 56k for a car that has lazy/loose steering, floaty suspension and a terrible exhaust note... no thank you. I easily could have afforded a 335- but with the amount I that I drive/reliability factors, I could not justify to deal with the hpfp failure. My last car (a VW touareg V8) was in the shop more than I got to drive it, basically. I actually has driven almost every Audi in the line up as loaners when my car would go in for various parts such as; driveshafts, bearings, a thermostat, climate control system replacements and so forth. I did like the Audi- but some of my friends had the 328 and 335. I fell in love with the smooth and linear feel of the 328. The 335 would be great for me as a second car with all of that power. Back to Audi- obviously the brand you choose is clearly for subjective reasoning, but coming from my mom's old Audis (A8, A6 and TT) to see the new product direction... it really left me unimpressed after driving my roommates/loaners. Sure, they look all fancy with LED's and swoopy body lines- but this also dates the car I feel. I mean, look at the q7! It is like a hippo that had some fun in mud and rolled around in LED lights. That and terrible reliability = . I don't have time for that.

Agreed. I would never pay that much for an a5. the A5 is atrocious.

In other news, my parents used to have a V8 touareg and it never had any problems until around 50k miles, and then it started having problems once a month. I'd love to get an S4. But i'd definitely get rid of it after 4 years.

I ve never driven a s4/s5 but I think audi has its unique good looks. is it better looking than BMW 3's? Not in my opinion... different looks. BMW is more edgy and angular, audi is more flowing. it is personal preference, since both scream "luxury".

as for the interior, I just read too many car mags that praised audi's interior quality so I'll give audi the edge.

but we dont buy 50k+ cars for interior alone... car's performance is what we pay big bucks for. in handling and performance I'll give a significant edge to BMW. most articles that I read states how superior BMW is when it comes to handling. almost all the ariticles by different mags has similar comments about audi's handling as 'detached' 'dull' or 'sluggish'.

I do want to say the current S4 is a ass whooper. it recently beat 335i in a car and drivers comparo, albeit being almost 10k more expensive. well, it beat 335i by a very small margin. s4 is a only car that can say it bested a 335i in a comparo...

so all in all, what is my point? dollar for dollar, BMW wins supreme over audi still.

MERCSUk153...thanks for keeping the 1.8T "neva-lose" legend alive! Playing!

I have yet to understand why Audi has not put the 3.0T in the S5 coupe. But as a long time Audi fanboi...the other day I parked my e92 and when I came out there was an open spot and then a brand new s-line A5 parked. Its owner was comparing too...and while we agreed there was not much in it...different strokes for different folks...for me....I suddenly noticed the rakish and angular c pillar that juts into the flowing body lines on the A5...first "weird" angle I've noticed on that car for me.

And we both got in our cars and drove away knowing we both drove the nicer car! Life is best this way!

Heck, after driving my BMW for 8 months I'm even thinking the Bangle butt 5 series are nice looking cars...seriously!

Don't understand the 2.0T engine though in that car since GT cars are for cruising and the 2.0T engine tuned is hardly a cruising car.
I was arguing based solely on the 2.0T engine that another 328 owner said was slow. I was just pointing out once tuned that the 2.0T engine is superior IMO to the 328xi engine for performance not to mention that it could also be modded with a larger turbo to get even more power but that is a whole other discussion.
As for Audi not being reliable than I can't argue that against the 328 as that is a fairly reliable engine. Once you compare the 335is and and other higher performance models from BMW you will see that it is no more reliable than Audi's as much as you BMW owners want to think. Look at the reports from various sources like JD power and Consumer Reports and any other industry reliability report and you will see that they all more or less indicate this. Don't tell me that all the industry reports are innaccurate.
You could have had a bad experience but it doesn't mean that is the norm as if you read these boards you would think BMW is the worst but it isn't any better or worse than Audi.
As much as you hate the led lights if you haven't noticed BMW has incorporated them also!

Unfortunately, Audi's (at least in the northeast, a prominent market for Audi) are known to be prone to some ridiculous problems. My mom's a6 2.7t in 2004 needed two turbo replacements, one awd sensor, a transmission solenoid replaced and a million other things. With the "its only this car- I will trade up attitude" she went and traded it in for a 2006 Audi A8 L. This car always had the headlight distance control light go off, the whole dash backlighting stopped working at 5k miles, the rear window would not go down, the trim on the rear door kept popping up and broke when closing it once, one time the screen was shut in behind the wooden-trimmed door and we could not access a lot of the features on the MMI. After 40,000 miles- my mom called it quits with Audi. This should not happen with a 75,000.00 car. Growing up we had 7-series and they never had any of these issues I am not bashing Audi- but it is a car that has not done me, or my family well. Yes, BMW has their reliability issues and so does mercedes- hell even honda and kia do in some of their cars. However, many of my friends and family who have both bmw's and mercedes do not nearly have half the amount of problems mechanically, or quality-wise than Audi or VW. It is unfortunate, but it's the truth. In 2009, my Touareg 4.2 was in the dealer 11 times (and towed 3 times). In 2010, my 328xi was at the dealer one time.. for scheduled maintnence. In terms of looks, and quality- the new Audi's are just for different tastes IMO... BMW does have LED's but they are not in straight lines. They are in the same shape as their traditional design, which makes them appear a little updated but not obnoxious.

The bump over the front wheel well ruins the look of the S5 for me, the rest of the car is OK but bland. In all honesty I would take my 335i over the a/s5 in the looks dept any day of the week.

Can you guys please share the crack you are smoking to make you think the S5 is even in the same realm of the M3 (asteticlly)?
