E90 LCI halogen headlights conversion DIY

So I opened up my e90 LCI halogen headlights to fit the Morimoto Mini H1 projectors. I did not cut them open like most people on the forum did. Instead went the baking route
  • 275F for 15 mins
  • Flat head screw driver and released the top layer carefully
  • Used a plastic bicycle tire removal tool (I had a very stiff one that came with my bike) and used it to gently releast the clear lens deep inside the grooves. The tire removal tool looked very similar to the Retrofitlab.com's permaseal tool. Just that it was plastic and not as thin as the metal tool.
  • Then used the flat head screw driver again to release the lens from the housing
  • It took 2 heat cycles to get this done

The real pain is that in LCI headlights, the inside trim is also permasealed. So the clear lens comes out but the trim is still glued to the housing. How can I remove this? I am not certain about baking them with the headlight open.

I broke the angel eyes on both headlights though. But the breaking point is at the top of the angel eyes. So I should not have any trouble with weakened angel eye output.

Are there any known good techniques to open up the trim from the housing?

And anyone with an LCI headlight and Umnitza orion installed, please suggest if you glued the orions on top of the stock angel eyes or did you mount them on the projectors? I dont want to go the solder route that you see in the youtube videos.

Thanks.

I will post up the pics soo to this thread.

The trim isn't perma sealed. If I remember, it's just held in with a tab. I epoxied my inner rings to the stock high beam halogen shroud and epoxied outer rings to my e46 projector shroud

Thanks uber. Did you buy the orion V2's or the V4's?

I bought Iris Shroud with my projector and also the default Mini gatling guns. But without taking out the trim, I cannot even fit Iris onto the projector. From what I see, the Trim piece has extensions that also sit inside the grooves for clear lens. So when I removed the lens, the trim extensions are still sitting inside the groove and I tried to pry it out and broke 1 extension already. So I am worried about causing more damage. I will epoxy the broken piece so it should still be ok.

I see someone use V2.5 on this thread (http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...t=orion&page=2).

How is the lifetime for the orion rings? Do they last long enough or would I need to keep replacing them every few years?

can you take pics so I can see what you're talking about? I remember my trim pieces coming right out. Maybe there's a torx screw somewhere.

As for the rings, they last the life of the car. I have v4's.

Check out my build thread if you need some pictures of the internals.

Wow, that looks awesome. Good job on your car there. I will try to take a picture of the headlights later today and upload here.

These pics show that the trim is part of the lens permaseal.

as far as the shroud goes that is part of the housing, cut it off with a dermal and use plastic seal to put it back on

Agreed. Just cut it off with a dremel. It's not needed. Once you get the lens on, the trim stays flush with the lens.

Well i baked them open. Cutting the lens scares me 😄😄. The only problem with baking is that you need to clean the old permaseal off which is a pain.

Are you sure i can cut the trim? I am worried if it would bounce around inside the lens if it is not flush.

Mine is cut. If you take a look at the lens, there are plastic ridges that hold the trim in the lens.

Thats cool e90CSL. Did u buy the Orion V2's?

Last night I did carefully release the trim from the permaseal on 1 headlight. Also beginning to clean the stupid permaseal off of the grooves so that I have a good seal with butyl. I ordered the V2's yesterday. Could not justify the V4 price.

Why did you not do the projector retrofit as well? 2 birds and 1 shot.
