Need new brake disc? Halfords' Brakes4Life?

Hi guys,

Newbie out here, so bear with me.

Had an MOT a couple days ago (with Halfords Autocentre), and was told my front discs is worn & rear discs worn as well as corroded. I asked the guy how much it would cost he said £400; I was like woahhh! - Surely that is extortion; but he goes on to say 'if we do it, you have 'brakes4life' bla bla bla.. So I'm assuming the '£400' quote refers to their 'brakes4life' policy, not that I asked but no point as he might take me on another ride. (or is he right in quoting that price?)

On that note if he's talking garbage, what discs would you recommend for my e90 318i m sport 2006? I've seen a set that cost around £200, on ebay?

Any help will be appreciated, thanks in advance.

I'd stick to OEM.

For example Pagid from...

http://www.eurocarparts.com

Currently got 25% off braking.

Garage List
I use BMG, they're based in leatherhead. They stock oem brands or decent alternatives like brembo.

Thanks for that, was looking on there earlier.

I've seen 2 different Pagid ones for both front/rear; how I know which is for me? or does it matter?

How much would it cost in total for them to replace my discs? (roughly)

& they're quite far from me - well an hr away. (just to get new discs, lol) unless they offer me a competitive price.

Id be willing to bet they weren't that worn either.
Get a 2nd opinion if you're not sure yourself before buying any!

Last summer i bought from m-tec off ebay, got front grooved discs and pads for £120 all in and there better IMO than the oem ones that where on the car, its a real simple job to do as well and you only need a few basic tools, only took me an hour.
Theres videos on youtube of how to change them, dont get mugged off by halfords or any other garage

What difference do you feel they make above OEM ones during fast road use? Are they noisy ?
Im thinking of changing mine soon. Cant decide to go EBC, MTec or stay OEM disks with EBC redstuff pads.

Exactly. I want/need to learn some of these DIY tasks. Could save a lot by learning, but scared that I'll mess it up. Unfamiliar territory and what not, then again first time for everything I guess.

MTec ones looking a good deal, as it comes with brake pads too. £200 for the lot (front/rear); but not sure which to choose option 1 / option 2?

just go for standard discs, fancy grooved drilled and slotted shite doesnt do anything for a road car. spend the money on a decent set of pads.

for fast road, id be going with Ferrodo Premier pads, and just generic discs from where ever is cheapest. its what im currently using on mine.

I read about MTEC brakes is the past and I'm not convinced about them.

They buy in discs and machine the slots, spot drill etc them themselves.

The fact they can afford to buy in discs, afford more labour to the parts and still sell them cheaply, makes me wonder how cheap the discs are intially.

As for Kwik Fit and the brakes, I don't know how often them or other garages recommend that the brakes need done when they don't. Easy job and easy money for them.

Did the car pass its MOT ok? If it did there can't be an immediate risk.

As for brakes for life, I only see these policies as a bit of a con. There won't be that many people who own a car for long enough to require new brakes again.

Fitted pagid set from eurocar parts and pleased with them. The OEM stuff in mine anway was made by textar. Similar to all other major brands. All BMW to is stick a logo ont he box and treble the price. The wear sensors BMW sell are identical to the pagid ones down to colour and stamped numbers.

Get set of pagid discs (primed to allow hub painting) and pads and get indie to do them.

Id never put EBC discs on a powerful, heavy car.
Ive had nothing but bad experiences of them as have plenty of other people I know over the years.

As above, I wouldn't bother with drilled or grooved either.
Drilled can crack around the holes, or they just fill with brake dust, and grooved can be really noisy

Ok it makes sense to go with OEM ones, but like I've asked before which one do I go for, cos they have 2 different ones for both front/rear? (different measurements)

This is the issue with ordering brakes mail order especially. You will probably find that there is different discs and pads listed as BMW did use different brakes at different times on the same model.

I've read a few people mentioning when they've phoned ECP they have managed to work out which ones are actually the correct ones.

Still never certain you will get the right ones.

If you are fitting them yourself, that might mean doing the job twice. If going to a garage, that might mean you will end up paying their labour twice.

If you are going down the garage route, tell them what you want and they are likely to have a ECP account and they will order the parts. This puts the onus on them to order the correct parts and shouldn't result in paying labour twice.

Most garages should only be around 90mins labour.

I went for OEM disc all round and Yellow stuff pads up front and OEM on the back. I find this match works really well.

Not a bad choice but all they are is either textar or pagid discs anyway. My last OEM set on e46 as part of the service plan where pagid. IMO no point going OEM its a service item mass produced by a specialist not by BMW. Its same case why buy tyres from a dealer and pay the premium. But each to their own I just dont like being ripped off

If it's not too much hassle for you then take the wheels off and measure.

I had to do the same when I bought mine.
