156mph at 5500rpm
That is what my 335i read as I hauled down the A6. I figured that by the time we would hit max RPM, if we had enough power, we could get to 198.5mph.
How much more power would this require? Bone stock 335i, 10k miles. |

I made 294km/h (on GPS) and there were still ~200rpm left. So, 300 km/h is achievable. Mods in my signature (I was stage 1 then, no FMIC). There's a video in video section. My car is MT. AT - a bit faster.

I thought AT should not be able to get this high due to it's shorter gearing.

Expectations are between 290-310 km/h (depending on circumstances)
I have a GPS measured top of 304km/h under perfect circumstances on RON100... had 400-500 revs left but because the used track ended I had to break.. (interesting experience at that speed by the way)... Be aware this topic might lead to discussion.... :-D

I hit a GPS-verified 183mph (295kph) on a stretch of the A61 towards Nurburg before having to brake due to bends on the autobahn! To get much more speed, I would need at least another 100bhp, and stay off the public roads! The main problem at that speed however is the amount of front-end lift there is - it gets a little(!) wayward as my car didn't have any front aerodynamics to keep the nose planted. I'll be giving it a go again in a couple of weeks to see what effect the Hartge front lip has on countering the effects of front-end lift at high speeds. Incidentally - car was a 335i AT, with DMS flash, AR catless downpipes, Code3 FMIC, standard airbox and exhaust (oh, and AP Racing brakes all round to help me stop!)

Yeah lift becomes a serious challenge... I did not experience front nose draft but my rear started to lift slightly...
Since some months I have an open rear diffuser and the MTech nose and planning to give it a new try somewhere end of the summer to see if the lift is now better controlable.... I have been phoning with the sports department of Michelin to see what this does to the tyres, I run PS2's. They are certified up to 300km/h but for a not to long moment. They advice to replace the tyres after the attempt... :-D But anyhow, if possible to do it on a controlled environment / autobahn, it is a real nice experience...

This is total madness without the right aero and suspension tweaks. With them, it is still very dangerous.
The chance of surviving a mishap that occurs at 150+ mph is close to zero. |

rpm*circumference of wheel*60/(final gear*6th gear*12*5280)
AT final gear= 3.46 6th gear = 0.69 Mt final gear= 3.08 6th gear = 0.87 tire height = 25" max speed AT = 218.07 max speed MT = 194.29 all neglecting tire distortion.

And as you can see my manual calculations are exactly the same as RoadandTracks 335i statistics

I did the same with my 335i e90 and it felt completely solid. Granted I didn't stay at the speed for long, but I felt comfortable that the car could easily have maintained it for a while.

Hi,
Just finished running in the car and took it out last night on the A7 Autobahn for a top speed run. The road was clear as it was late evening and made it to 160mph (stock car), thought it would stop at 155 but it went off the clock! I noticed that the car started to feel less planted, with noticeable front end lift after 140mph- almost like it was 'floating' on the road rather than on it(i have M Sport Aero and suspension). Im wondering if this is to be expected at these speeds or if it could be helped by lowering tyre pressure. Any thoughts? Anyway, an AMG mercedes pulled behind me whilst i was at 160mph, i moved to the centre lane and he passed me easily! Theres always a bigger fish out there!!! |
