Angry Blown Turbo with £1843 quote

Hey everyone,

The turbo went in my E90 320D this morning (a loud whining noise when pushing the gas, and significant drop in BHP). I dropped it off at a BMW specialists who have had a look at it today, and quoted me the following:

turbo: 1062 +VAT
gasket: 30 + vat
breathing vent valve: 48 + vat
oil + filter: 95+ vat
air filter: 29.99 + vat
6hr labour: 270 + vat
Total: 1535.99 +VAT
=£1843

Does anyone have any advice on where i can get any of these parts cheaper? As i cannot really afford this horrific price right now (i've just purchased a house)

All and any help is much appreciated.
Thanks,
Tom

Try them, Tony (E92fan) used them for his turbo rebuild.

thanks willhollin, i'm afraid this may not be an option for me- as i would have no idea how to get the turbo out- and its £80quid fuel to get there and back

You could always get a reconditioned turbo as well..

But if going new: check http://bmw-turbochargers.co.uk it might have the turbo cheaper..

Depending on the mileage you may be able to get a goodwill contribution from BMW towards replacing the tub, but then you need to take the job to them and it might cost more.

Another one of these gone... *gulp*...

There's the turbo for a fair bit cheaper, trouble is you won't have much come back if you get it fitted by a garage.

Why do you need a whole new turbo?

When my E92 turbo went they replaced the Turbo but the problem was so prolific at the time BMW came out with a "Turbo Kit" which is fitted instead of replacing the whole turbo.

Id look into this.

There is no such thing as a "turbo kit" for the Mitsubishi turbo as far as I know.....replace only and on an exchange basis.

In fact, specialists struggle to get proper Mitsi parts for them when rebuilding and some even use cheap parts from China.

If you are going to rebuild, check this first

Exhaustively

BMW themselves will have no access to individual spare parts for any turbocharger so where you get this "turbo kit" idea from I don't know!

Well this is what was happening back in 2007 when the 3 and 6 month old turbos were blowing up on the E92.

Makes me think getting a 330i is a good idea.

But I thought the 2 litre 4 pot was the best configuration in the range? Are you not somewhat contradicting yourself now then? All of a day later?

I'm confused.

It is the best but Turbos are Turbos, All diesels come with them and they are all prone to blowing up. Thanks to the EU all engines will be getting them.

6 Cyl Diesel turbos on the E92 were the ones causing all the issues when the model was first out, 4 Cyl were having issues but not as bad.

But you wouldnt know this would you MEGA? because the E92 has only just devalued into your budget hasnt it.

IMHO Not true. Mitsu turbo's used in the E46 and E90 320d are prone to blowing up. The numbers speak for themselves: I'm not sure I've ever seen a 330d turbo failure post on this forum. The 320 on the other hand gets at least one a week. The Garrett ones seem pretty bullet proof..

OK. I'll bite. I'm 24, earn upwards of 40k and could easilly put down 1000 a month on a car but I choose to save the rest. No need to get shitty with me just because this whole forum thinks you are a prick.

You live in a dream world.. And you should venture out of it less often

Besides anything else, what has my budget got to do with my ability to read? Heh..

Don't remember any problems on the I6 diesels?

Seems the Garrett turbos are pretty reliable.

I would have said you was 24 maybe 21 considering your attitude to other peoples opinions, im not here to gain 1ups from forum users.

40k in london is about 20k in the rest of the country mate, so while youre still at mommy and daddys house then you can drop 1k a month on a car if you like.

There were 3 6 cyl 330D in the sytner dealership waiting for new turbos in 2007 November.

The turbo in my 320D is apparently a different make from the one it originally had... so they said.

ill be honest this model has slightly more lag than the original

lol. I took over the rent at our home address because my mum was made redundant and was about to lose the house. So in fact, if not for my salary my mum would be in a council flat or homeless. Somewhat different to your jibe, but I'm happy to explain the situation. Your ignorance isn't your fault after all. You never asked.

It seems I struck a nerve quoting salary though. I don't think London tends to get a 100% payrise compared to somewhere 2 hours out. If it did, why would anyone not just commute down. I take it you didn't do as well as I at my age though? I ask only because you seem slightly bitter.

By the way, I only asked you why the about change. You then decided to try and get one up on me by responding in an aggressive personal way. I wondered why you'd gone from saying the 320 was best in the range to saying that it is prone to a high failure rate and etc.

My atitude to other people's opinions is only strong when the other people are talking complete bullshit.

Love and kisses.
Mega.
