my F-ing spoiler

History:

So I installed that spoiler on my car a while back. It was fine for a couple of weeks - and then it started lifting on the one corner. I first tried fixing it with super glue - and spilt glue all over my paint. With my own genius, I sanded it down and repainted it (bymyself) and it doesn't look to bad actually. Anyhow, it started lifting again. This time i thought, not super glue. I'll buy somemore stikkatape (thin black industrial strenth double sided tape used for attaching trim to cars) - So I lifted the spoiler slightly, applied more tape and that was that.

Present:

So, the other day I was looking at my spoiler, and it was lifting again. I though oh oh, I am going to use the tape to fix it again. I lifted the spoiler very gently, and 70% of it unstuck itself. I then proceeded to remove the entire spoiler, clayed the boot at got 90% of the sticky stuff off - ALL of it except the super glue from before. I tried for two days to get the super glue off, and couldn't - so I figured I could just stick the spoiler back on.

I cleaned the surface again, retaped the spoiler and stuck it back on. I even taped it down with masking tape while the "stikkatape" was setting hoping it wouldn't lift and all that again. Well. That lasted one day. The spoiler is all stuck down, but it's still lifting at the edges and in the middle a little.

I have to give it to BMW- it's the worst made OEM accessory ever. The spoiler doesn't actually fit the car. The edges needed to be pushed down on the original install, and since then have always popped back up. The spoiler is too short for the width of the boot - it should go edge to edge in my mind.

Granted, they do recommend using the beta-link system to glue it down, but other people who have attached it like that have had the same problems as me!!!

I am seriously considering taking my car to a pannelbeater, asking them to sand off the super glue, rebuff/repaint the boot depending on what they need to do and buff the scratches the spoiler has put on the boot. How much do you think it will cost (I don't have time to waste getting a quote if it's gonna be very expensive)

Maybe I should just leave it. I like the look of my spoiler from far, but up close when I see the ends lifting - it looks crap and PISSES me off.

*end of rant*

Did you use Beta-Link to start with and then it started to peel up?

Super glue on your paint, what were you thinking? You should of pre-fit the spoiler without anything, if it was that far off returned it for a new one.

Is this a typical problem with the OEM spoiler?
Is the CF one any better?

I was planning on having the standard spoiler installed by the dealer, but don't want to have it peeling off after a few months.

Don't take this wrong, but you probably should have used the Beta-Link in the first place, instead of the tape, not to mention the Super Glue . I realize it may seem very sticky and that it would work fine, but adhesive systems are actually somewhat complicated. What sticks to one thing really well, may or may not work for another surface. I'd bet BMW has done a lot of testing with Beta-Link and their paints to make sure they work well together. Hopefully you can get the superglue off or at least sand it down enough so you can cover it with the spoiler when you put it back on (with beta-link this time ).

Sorry to tell you this, but you didn't follow the instruction in the first place and use Betalink to glue down your spoiler and that's why stuff like this happen. If you use Betalink and still does it, then it'll be a different story.

P.S. Why didn't you use Betalink in the first place?

there's a bottle of beta link cleaner that preps the surface. Using double sided tape isnt wrong but prep work going into it is crucial to ensure proper adhesion. Question to you is: Did the tape lift from the boot? or did the tape stick to the boot and not the spoiler? If it lifted from the boot than it's safe to say that you didnt prep the surface of the boot good enough for proper adhesion. If it lifted off the spoiler, then there were some surface contaminent that was left over from the painting of the spoiler that made the double tape not stick. Either way, you need to go back and do both now if you plan to use double tape. And might i recommend you use 3M trim tape, that thing once set up in the sun will take brute force to remove.

or the other option is use the actual silicone that was supplied w/ the spoiler.

Super glue will ruin anything it touches, that stuff has some strong bonding chemical that will destroy the delicate clear coat. As you said the best thing now is betalink it or just toss the spoiler in the dumpster and repaint the trunk. dont' know how much it cost to repaint.

guys guys, easy on the super glue comment pls, I remember a while back Broken posted about his ordeal on using the superglue, and he had already said that he didn't know what he was thinking and regretting using it. What's done is done, let's offer him suggestions on what he can do at this point to remedy the situation, I don't think he needs anymore lectures on not using superglue on his paint.

I hear ya, sorry buddy...

as said, toss the spoiler and repaint. I am in US so price will be different in SA.

edit: why toss the spoiler, cuz everytim he sees it, it will remind him of the superglue incident. Best to toss it and not look at it again.

My SG OEM spoiler was put on last Sept 05, 10 mos. later its still on. I followed the instruction very carefully plus did some extra steps in applying the betalink and also taped tightly the ends alongside clamping them during cure. Ive done a photo DIY on e90post DIY list.
Sorry to hear about your problem.

Thanks man. Appreciate the support. Truth is, the spoiler has been a disaster from the start - but I'm young, and I'm learning.

I think for now, I am going to just try leave it - and not look at it up close.

If I get busy again one day - and pull it off...then it comes off, and a bodyshop can sand down and repaint my boot.

I will admit it freely on the forum. I fucked up. 1) When I bought the BMW spoiler, instead of the Hamman one I "really' wanted. 2) When I took it to a friend to paint and install (who's brillaint idea the tape was. 3) When I used super glue, masking tape, sandpaper, spray paint, more super glue to fix/damage more/try fix again and then fix while damaing. and 4) when I took the spoiler off and 5) When I stuck it back on again.

Oh well. You live and learn :-)

As some of you might know, i'm going on vacation to spain and london in 2 weeks time. Depending on how much money I spend, I will make a decision to leave or "fix" when I get back!

Damn. First the mishap with the grills and now this. I won't rub any salt in - you'd be amazed at some of the things I do! Sounds like some good advice has been given (in between the "why did you use super glue?" lectures). It might be worth talking to your dealer or a body shop guy to get their advice.

Good luck!

P.S. Is Broken1 your name or your car's name?? Sorry - with the rotten luck you've had, couldn't resist.

I didn’t mean to lecture, sorry B1. Lesson learned, now don't do it again, haha.

Well if anything, this has saved me money in the future. With modding experiences like these as your first, chance of me going bigger and more technical are slim.

Hey B1,

Nothing wrong with trying it yourself. At least the spoiler is pretty much attached to the car and shouldn't fall off anytime soon. So many others here mod their cars themselves and I say well done!!!

So, the thing has peeled off a bit. As you said, you can get it fixed so enjoy your holiday abroad and I'm sure you will come to a solution after that.

Take care.

Follow the instruction next time. Why didn't you use the Betalink the first place anyway? Most of us won't take off the spoiler after installed anyway. Why bother to use tape? Betalink rocks.
