Traffic coppers and speed guns

The mrs phoned me this morning all panicking because she was doing ~5mph over the speed limit and passed two coppers on the side of the road with the hand held speed guns.

She wasn't stopped at the time, and there was no police car further up the road to stop any speeding cars that went past etc. Now she said a copper wrote something down as she past, and she didnt realise it was a 20mph zone at that time of the day and she was doing about 25-26mph

Is it likely she'll be hearing from the police with a fine and a penalty? I cant see why they wouldnt stop her at the time, but what do I know!

Any advice appreciated.

There's another thread kicking about on this subject. There is a chance she'll be receiving a NIP in the post!

They don't have to stop you there and then, you *might* get an NIP as Jon says, but you might not. 25 mph is likely to be a warning-type / community action letter thing.

They need to stop you there and then whilst commiting the offence.....fact.
Unless they have a picture or video evidence of your better half speeding with vehicle reg etc then she has nothing to worry about.

It is NOT fact - I refer you to the other similar thread where I was prosecuted without ever being stopped at the time.

I dont think it's the case up here mate, really sure of it...we need 2 coppers up here to stop you and charge you with speeding etc etc so the law does differ slightly.

I did read your post earlier and wondered how that stood in court...I dont think you got it fair. STill baffled tbh.

They do have to stop you. Im quite sure by the sounds of the situation that they were after a serial offender, or someone actually going very quickly. Not people doign 25mph.

probably writing down any old squit to make you shit ya pants. But with no follow up.

Mine wasn't speeding (it was contravention of a traffic light) but there was no photographic evidence offered and I wasn't stopped at the time.

The police don't have to stop you. A photo is evidence, but the same evidence can be provided based on a policemans measurements and observations.

To Masterplan - I would hope that your wife is in the clear. If you own the car and you don't hear anything for 14 days it's fine. It's more likely that (as Carl says) they were looking for 30+ in the 20 zone. If your wifes car was reading 25-26 she was probably doing slightly less.

They are getting more sneaky though, so nothing will suprise me!

Again chaps, I think the law is different in Scotland according to one of my mates who is an ex copper.

What he did say was, there is 2 different types of guns, one that records speed only and the other slightly larger one which can record reg etc I believe. Also, they have to be 'tuned' at the site of the speed trap using markers etc and use the police car to calibrate the speed trap etc. Dont know if this is recorded in any way.

What was also mentioned when discussing this was, if you get the fine through..send away a check for £1 more than the actual fine, they will then send back a cheque for £1 but dont cash it, if it is not cashed the system does not update it. Dont know if this works but a few boys seem to think so. Worth a go for the sake of a quid.

Freak ME, thats freakin Obvious. But speed guns are NOT speed cameras.......

So therefore they have to tug you.
