I've been having the same ticking problem on my CPO for a few months now. It was only occasionally at first but now it's pretty much constant. Called my dealer today and told them my problem and mentioned the new service bulletin which they said was news to them. Bringing it in tomorrow to see what they say, but they're about 90 miles away so I'm guessing the ticking will have stopped by the time I get there. I'll let you guys know what happens.

^^ Leave it over night if you have to, I did and they labeled onto my acct that I have it on my CPO but I dont want them to mess with it as of yet, Plus they mentioned that it could be the VANOS system if it only does it in the cold weather?

Well as expected the ticking had stopped by the time I got to my dealer, but the rep was aware that this was an issue on cold starts. I showed him the service bulletin from above and left it there for the afternoon. When I came back he said that the lifters were indeed the source of the tick and they would order the new parts which would be covered under the stock warranty. I was surprised at how easy the process was (so far). Hopefully this will be the end of it...

There is hope! My cylinder head got replaced at 22k miles and no ticking has resurfaced since (now at 28k miles). Car runs great and pulls really strong.

I have an '06 325i with about 48,000 on it. Recently, it began ticking in the morning upon start up. I took it into Beverly Hills BMW and then researched the issue on the web and noted that there's a new cylinder head out there. I then heard back from the dealer that they were going to replace the 12 exhaust side lifters. I asked why not the cylinder head, and demanded to see the service bulletin. The Sept. 09 bulletin posted on this blog appears to be the latest one and is the same one they gave me. It dispenses with the bleed procedure, and mandates replacement of ONLY the exhaust side lifters. No more tick, and the tech advised me that there was not excessive wear on the cams, etc. The next step is cylinder head replacement.

As such, anyone with a lifter tick (and it's an obvious sound if you have any car knowledge at all), should demand at the very least that the exhaust side lifters be replaced.

That's what I want to hear! I've got a head on order. I'm reaaaaly hoping this cures the valve tap since my warranty expires next month.

Well we have a 2006 330xi that we bought new. It only has about 25k on it and the ticking has been around quite a bit. I think we have had the engine "bled" at least 3 times with no improvement. I haven't been on e90post in a while and when I checked in I saw this sticky and the SB about the head replacement. I called my SA and mentioned it. He is familiar with the bulletin but mentioned that it has been superceded with a new bulletin that calls for the lifters to be replaced. I am going in on the 17th to get the work done. Hopefully it will work as we plan on keeping the car for many more years.

Any thoughts on head replacement vs. lifter replacement? It looks like some have had heads done and some have had lifters done. It also seems like each procedure has had it's successes and failures!

According to the SA at Monterey BMW the PUMA case for this issue has a specific progression of repairs. First they bleed the lifters, then replace the exhaust side lifters, then cylinder head replacement. Others may have a different experience but this is how BMW NA has chosen to work my case.

I wonder if the above mentioned bulletin is shared with BMW Canada. The person I spoke to my dealer was not aware of it.

So was there a fix? I know SB wanted to install new valve lifters but did the new valve lifters stop ticking? Or does it still tick after few months?

On mine the valves started tapping 2 days after the exhaust lifter replacement.

+1. There sure is hope. Been over a year and over 10,000 miles since the cylinder head replacement on mine and all is well.

I have a similar situation where I hear this ticking/knocking noise while slowly parking the car, mostly when I'm making a difficult turn ( which requires moving the car back and forth and stirring the wheel). Any idea?

Totally different issue -- search "wheel knock when turning" or stuff like that to find the old threads. People who have had your issue have gotten it fixed with a steering column replacement.

Who did you buy it from? Herb Chambers?

Print out this thread and bring it to them, highlight the SB, that should wake them up.

Video suggests the engine just burned by itself when the car was shut off, only a little while after getting checked for a Service Engine Soon light by the BMW dealer and being told to come back for a software update.

I would bet this car did not just burst into flames by itself. I bet the techs at the dealer were checking out the engine and left a rag or something in the engine bay. Our engines get very hot.
