Mom needs a new car

which one should she get?
Please advise if you have any experience/knowledge of either of these cars.

2012 honda cr-v lx 4wd
2012 Subaru Outback 2.5i Prem

both are within hundred $$ of each other.

never owned a subaru nor has anyone in the family but they pride on their symmetric 4wd. Not sure how much of a difference that makes since we live around DC area (Not much bad weather).

Voted for the Subie, as I dig wagons. And I think the styling of the new CR-V is awkward. Just my 2 cents... I think as far as reliability goes it would be a wash.

No x3. We want to keep the budget at 25k. Already have too many cars in the house and hate keeping new nice cars out 24/7. plus a nicely loaded x3 is like 45-52k

A good friend of mine has a loaded CRV. Not typically my type of vehicle but I was surprised at how nice it is and what you get for the price. I myself have owned two X3's and they are FANTASTIC! I absolutely loved them.

Not feeling the cross-over type SUV for Suby. Voted for the CR-V

You should consider the RAV4, it is very close to that price point. It handles well for an SUV, is very practical, and has near-bulletproof reliability.

Both great choices, I am a big Honda and Subaru fan. Don't love the new CRV styling, kinda reminds me too much of a Volvo which isn't a bad thing, but it just doesn't work on that car. Subaru all the way, they are bulletproof.

Suby. Also check out the Forester. The Forester is a closer comparison to the CRV.

I just looked at a Forester on Saturday. Nice leather, heated seats, sunroof, power everything. Not as plush as a Legacy but not bad at all.

yeah, we are not looking at the leather seats, sunroof etc. trying to keep the cost low.

Looking at the Outback with package 11 which has fogs and heated seats on the cloth seats. I like the interior a lot. I almost bought it last year, but ended up getting an Accord SE. I have one SUV already and didn't want another SUV/crossover.

But now iwth moms' car getting old, we want to replace and get her into something nice.

I am also probably gonna get a brz sometimes later this year or next year for the track. Mom's Outback may be the gateway to Subie world for me.

I vote Mazda CX5.

Definitely the "sports car" of the small utes and has been getting high praise for it too.

i did go to the dealer to look at it. It looked nice in the top trim level, the rest looked kinda cheap/plasticy.

went to the dealer last night to check out the cr-v. Wasn't really sure about the lx model. looked so very basic and way too much plastic imho. Having previously owning a crv i was disappointed. Mom doesn't have like 30k to dish out for the ex-l model.

The Subaru is in the winning right now.

updates to come soon. Memorial day weekend I will get to do an extended test drive on the Outback. Really wish she could pony up and the new rdx or x3, but those are 40k to 50k. Out of her budget. :-)
