At least you don't have a 2010. Then you have 6 speakers and no amp

I am about to buy a car charger for my new phone and thought for a second I'd have to get one of those dual chargers since it seemed there was only one outlet in the car I'm expecting. Thanks to the information here I have a lot more flexibility.

Thanks to all for the great information.
Well it seems I didn't well enough. The online manual still shows the ashtray but it also describes the outlet under the glove box. So at one point I guess there were three outlets and now only two.

i know this thread is 16 months old, but you just taught me something new about my 2-yr-old e92. i needed a 12v outlet for my new garmin nuvi gps, and the socket in the center armrest isn't set deep enough to accommodate the outrageously tall garmin plug that came with the nuvi. well lo and behold there is this second 12v outlet next to the glove box but completely hidden from casual observation. perfect for my needs, and an obvious upgrade from plugging the gps into the armrest and driving around with the armrest open since it can't close.

you guys rock .

I will have to check my 2011 335i Sedan to see if I have the socket under there. Crazy thing is I was just under there with the glove box out to hard wire my radar detector and didnt even notice it...I will be checking today...Learn something every day.

The deletions of sockets are disappointing. On a long trip my passenger & I used all three power sockets. Ashtray lighter->radar detector, center console power->cell charge, glovebox flashlight power adapter->laptop.

I don't mind the ashtray area. I have a pico tray instead of the ashtray.

UHHHH..... ?!?!??! .... WTF is this and where do I get one?!?

Never knew of such a thing - you can customize the ash tray? WTF? I have the "smoker's package" but don't smoke - that businesss card looking thing with a pen would be about 100x better!

Funny thing, when i was buying my '09 I bitched to the salesman that it was going to be a pain in the ass to power my RD. He was the one who told me about the second outlet. I've since hard wired it.

Totally unrelated and I didn't search this but since a few people have made this "new" discovery, do you know you can aggressively brake the car by pulling back on the cruise stalk? It doesn't activate the brake lights and I am actually curious as to how it slows the car down that quickly.

I was told that it cuts off fuel supply into the cylinders.

There is a DIY around here somewhere (probably in the DIY Section) that shows how to install the European spec rear center console outlets:
Name: Rear power outlets.jpg
Views: 3071
Size: 124.8 KB

It's kind of a useless little tray, but the OE ashtray isn't worth much either.

On my E91, I didn't want to encourage rear seat passengers to plug in too many devices, so I just put in a single power supply, and plugged in a USB adapter with a blue LED that lights up the rear seat area nicely:
Name: CIMG0953 POWER OUTLET.jpg
Views: 4980
Size: 124.5 KB
This particular USB adapter was chosen because it has a swing out handle that makes it easier to unplug (not that I have ever had to unplug it) and the brushed chrome on the handle matches the brushed chrome accent on the ash tray (BFD).

The USB adapters come in variety of styles. The voltage is standard, but get something 1 amp or higher for charging a GPS or phone. Here are the BMW and Griffin adapters, respectively:
Name: BMW 399.png
Views: 2808
Size: 10.5 KB
Name: Griffin USB.jpg
Views: 2722
Size: 4.8 KB

These small USB adapters can be plugged into the ash tray and center console power outlets, as well. In the center console outlet, you can plug in the appropriate USB extension and easily close the lid.

Try it again. It absolutely should activate your brake lights, both my '07 and '11 did and do.

I'll try again but I have tried to confirm this at least twice and I didn't see the BL come on. Does anyone else have any info on this?

I came here to search about my outlet, scored with this thread. I learned I do have an outlet in case I wanted a quick install for a radar detector or to charge a 2nd phone.

My other question is, why won't my center console outlet work? I've plugged 2 different chargers into it and neither received power. It's a 2010 CPO, maybe a bad fuse, but figured I'd ask in case there's a situation where it's not wired or something.

Check your fuses (it's at the back of the glove box on the inside). The only time when I couldn't get power from both of my 12v outlets was when the fuse blew. It's a mini 20amp fuse - #8 on the fuse diagram:

I was also shocked when I found this second port. I was somewhat mad that lci models got rid of the outlet/lid and found that my dashcam plug was too tall for the outlet under the armrest so I went to look at the fusebox to see how I can hardwire it and saw the outlet hidden under the glovebox!

Makes hiding the cables so easy and I can always remove it without having anything modified.

I have a 2009 E90 with the smokers package. I have no power outlet next to my glove compartment, just an empty hole. Is it possible that for the smokers package they just moved the outlet up to the ashtray?

Perfect thank you! I installed my aftermarket backup camera and now I have a place for my GPS, I still prefer my Garmin over the GPS that comes with the car.
