Are all BMW owners overly protective when parking?
I am so worried about some yahoo slamming my doors with theirs or hitting it with their keys swaying, etc...
I have walked out of restaurants when I notice that someone has parked too close. Not to be sexist, but women with kids worry the most. Most guys are into keeping their cars looking nice and tend to be more consciencous (althouhg my sample of 1...my wife...may or may not be representative to draw this conclusion). Are other folks as protective as I am?

Protective, yes. But I'm not as bad as I was before. Before my BMW I had an absolutely mint condition 2003 Cobra, low miles, spotless inside and out. Hell, it never even saw the rain (not that it was very safe in the rain, nearly 500 HP and torque, no traction control, and dry tires). Now that car I would stand at the window and watch whenever someone pulled up next to me.
Women definitely are worse, and I don't think that's sexiest. The majority of women don't care about cars and don't understand us guys and our cars. Now bordering a little more on the sexist side, but I generally find to be true, women also seem to always have a million things going on in their head all the time, and don't pay as much attention to things like that. But by far, children have women beat. Children not only don't understand what they are doing (I KNOW I was taught better as a child, but then I actually had parents who taught me right and wrong unlike a lot of kids these days), but they always seem to have to fling their door open as hard as they can. Thank god minivans have sliding doors. Just watch out for soccer moms pulling up in their SUV full of kids.

i park as far as possible only bc some chick slammed her door into my 06 x5 a few years back. some nut could still hit me but i figure i lower the chances by doing that.

there are some folks in Colorado that drive those ginormous pick ups with 4 rear wheels. Those worry the heck out of me. I try and park far away as well.

Nope. Some of the guys in more expensive BMW's just pull in and walk out. I try to park in between the line perfectly. And I always check around my car if I come back and see 2 big SUV's sandwiched my car in.

......most people really dont give a shit, I however, do. I've seen high end car after high end car just parked like anything else around here, for years. Lamborghini's parked in between SUV's at 24 hour fitness. Bentley's and Ferrari's parked where the hell ever theres a spot at the movie theaters, I even see plenty of 7 series' parked crooked all the time.
I just like to park next to walls, columns, handicapped spaces, or no parking zones, because then I can park further to the left/right from the car next to me

I try very hard to minimize my exposure when I park.
When I park in a lot, I park as far away from everyone as I can. When I parallel park, I look for spaces where no one can park in front of me or behind me. There are no guarantees, but following these practices reduces my risk. I need to walk more anyhow, but it irritates my wife. |

I try to park in the boonies of parking lots. I already had to witness (while in the car) some lil'girl with her mommy Swing the Honda Accord door into my baby, followed by an innocent look that calmed my understandable anger. One trip to the paintless dent removal...pricey though. |

Away from anyone else.
Against a wall or then end of the parking lot. And, if possible, such that my car is only exposed to the passenger side of the car next to me. (high chance that there is no passenger in the other car). That assumes that the other car parks as expected. Once I came back and saw a ding caused by a m****r-f****r who had parked the other way. a****le! +1 on mothers and kids with SUV and minivan not paying attention. BTW, I have that set at home. FM

A lot of older people with 7 and 5 series don't seem to care, but I certainly care with my own car!
I definitely park way far to minimize the chance of people parking next to me |

mothers with kids....WTF - I pulled in and I was walking around my car and this lady opens her door and almost WHAMS it into mine! It just tapped it, but I was like OMFG (in my mind) and then she said sorry. I cooled down and said "it's ok" like nothing happened. (She's LUCKY nothing happened!)

It's the price you pay to keep your car in mint condition. I find myself taking cabs a lot just to avoid getting my bumpers scraped or getting dings in my doors. If I get a flaw on my car it cuts deep into my psyche.
It takes a lot to get me going but if someone comes too close to my car I get very protective! |

I do all things mentioned above. I even have my two little girls trained and they love my BMW just as much as I do. Wife hates it when I make her walk a few xtra steps when going shopping.

I can certainly see how anyone with a car they're proud of (like BMW owners, or 'Vette owners or even Civic Si owners) would be very protective of what they love. I drove an old minivan for a while... I didn't care what the car was. If they couldn't park properly, they would feel the sting of the corner molding
Very few women understand cars. To them (and many guys) it is just a appliance, like a mixer or an oven to be used. Who cares if it stays nice? Fuh P.S. Why do new brides wear white?

I'm extremely protective of my e90 since its my first car I actually had to purchase (or finance) on my own. My only other car was a '93 honda station wagon, which I liked to call "extended hatchback" . I didn't care where I parked that thing.
With my e90, first I'd venture to find parking spots on the ends, next to walls, islands, or handicaps cuz they have that extra unloading spaces on the sides. If that fails then I'd search for spots next to other bmw, mb, vetts, brand new cars, etc. just cuz they are probably protective of their cars too. Last is droping off my passengers and parking far away. You never know how much that extra precaution could save you hundreds or maybe even thousands of $$$. |
