Shaking after spacer install

As the title reads, I'm getting shaking after I installed spacers (12mm&15mm). It never did this before I installed them. It's not noticeable from 10-40mph but over 40mph it gets very noticeable that I can see the steering wheel shimmying back and forth. I did notice during the installation of the spacers, I had to remove a plastic ring that was on the centric hub. After I cleand off the hub, the spacer slid on nicely and I re-installed the wheels as usual and torque down to 90lb. Was I suppose to put that plastic ring on the spacers as well? I really don't want the wheels falling off while I'm driving. That would just plain suck! HELP!!!

Yeah, that plastic ring is called a hubcentric spacer. It compensates for the difference between the hub and the wheel or car hub it must fit tightly against. Put the rings back in and the shaking will go away if the spacers are 72.56mm. I bet your spacers are 74.1mm and you are ringing them down.

Mine didn't have said ring, I installed the 72.xx spacers, yet I still have the shimmy. I don't see how this could cause the need for an alignment. Ideas?

The spacers are BMS wheel spcers...not some off brand spacer from ebay. What do you mean ringing them down. Are you referring to my torquing down the wheel bolts? I didn't think it would make a difference since the spacers are really thin. I guess it does. Do you think that the spacers are not sitting flush against the wheel hub thereby causing a wobbling effect or do you think it's definately the hubcentric spacers..

I wouldn't think the wheels need rebalancing since all I did was removed the wheel and slipped a spacer between the wheel and rotor. The only thing that does makes sence is to put those platice hubcentric spacers on...

That is what you need to do! Place the spacer on the car, then place the hubcentric ring on the spacer, finally install the rim! I had to do it to my Mini cooper. No Vibrations!

Hubcentric spacers are only needed if you have "universal" aftermarket wheels where the hub bore is larger than the hub diameter of the car. They are still not needed but they help center the wheel on the car for people in a rush. If you don't have them and your wheels are universal, just put all of your lug nuts and tighten them only hand tight and then torque your wheels in a star pattern while rotating the wheel...this will make sure the wheel is centered on the hub.

Hmm. I had followed the star pattern but I just nudged it down with a 1/2in ratchet. I'll have to gice this a try. The wheels are Beyern so I would imagine that they aren't 'generic' in terms of hub fitment. But then again I know an alignment can't fix this wobble, seeing as that is wasn't present before the spacer install.

I'll re-tighten the bolts and check in

Yup..That's what I was planning on doing later tonight after it's cooled down. Aside from being at work, it's balls sweating hot out there...

What 'ring' are you guys referring to? I too have the BMS wheel spacers for (12F and 15R) and have experienced the slight vibration the OP mentioned...anyone have a picture of the ring? Mine just came with the plates, that's all

I thought I did tighten the bolts in a star pattern, if I didn't, that might explain the vibration since they're not completely parallel to the hub ?

Are you on oem wheels or aftermarket wheels?

I have pictures of these spacers.I'll take a pic and post them. For now they are a really thin nylon plastic that slips over the rotor hub. They didn't come off gracefull at first so I had to take a utility knife and kind slid it between the spacer and hub all the way around to loosen it up. then I pryed it off with a small screwdriver..

OK..Got home and changed and installed the spacers in 15 minutes! I have to say, 99 degree hot and humid weather coupled with dark clouds and thunder in the distance definitely motives a person. Anyway after installing it, the shaking went away. even did 70 in a 45 zone and rock steady like she was before. It's amazing what a little piece of nylon plastic can do!
