BMW Driver = Guardian Reader?!
Just a bit of fun for a Friday...
Our company car park bristles with luxury German cars. So I didn't think I was doing anything very ostentatious by pruchasing a 3 Series. But just the other day, as I was making my way across the car park, a colleague couldn't help commenting: "Oh no, not another BMW driver!" And of course we all know (don't we? sure we do) what is normally intended by that phrase, 'BMW Driver', it connotes, well, something not entirely positive, despite the fact that BMW's are now a much more popular and therefore frequently occurring (don't want to say 'common') sight on our roads. Anyway, speaking of common (miss-) conceptions, I was reminded that not too long ago, another work colleague came into the kitchen as I was coming out. I happened to be carrying a copy of a certain British Newspaper, which elicited a curiously similar taunt to the one provoked by my choice of car: "Oh no, not another Guardian reader!" Anyone had a similar experience? And for bonus points, anybody had both? And does the combination of 'Guardian Reader' and 'BMW Driver', and their respective associated negative stereotypes, occur often on this forum??? |

When I announced my intention to buy a BMW, (after coming from a long line of Japanese sports coupes), many friends expressed surprise and I have suffered the dreadful stereotyping associated with the marque:
All BMW drivers are arrogant All BMW drivers think they own the road all BMW drivers are w*****s! Do you always drive in the BMW lane on the motorway? And some unfortunate racist associations and references to drug dealer's cars etc. etc. The other day I was parked up waiting to see the Police at the MEN and due to the nature of a very tight space I'd parked diagonally, still only taking one space and part of a corner. 'Look at that t**t' someone passing remarked. 'Typical bloody BMW driver taking 2 spaces up!' I couldn't be bothered to point out that I wasn't. To be honest I don't give a stuff. I chose the car because I like it and wanted a spacious sports coupe that had decent perfomance. I'm not a die hard and loyal fan of the brand. I don't like all BMWs. I'm not a fan of saloons or estates for example and actively dislike 4x4s. Each to their own as far as I'm concerned. I may or may not buy one again! As far as newspapers are concerned, I long since stopped buying them as I get depressed enough without needing to read a paper!

A couple of jibes I've read:
"Do you have to tick the option box for direction indicators" "BMW's get their power from the crash barriers on the central reservation on M/ways,hence why you never see them in any other lane"
