Didn't P cars also switch to electric steering? I don't think its a matter of electric vs hydrolic, its how well its made

Any one switches from japanese cars to E90, might want to hear your opinions about both cars.
Went from an 07 accord V6 EX to an 07 335i 6spd. Best upgrade I ever did. I still drive the honda sometimes since I sold it to my sister and I can't imagine how I managed to drive that car for so long. No way I can go back now steering and road feel is so far ahead its scary.

And Active Steering is not a "boost" system, it is a ratio-control system (as well as "lemme take over and steer it for you" system).

The first generation of 3-series with an electric motor providing steering boost is F30.
Steering boost and Active Steering are all components of the Hydraulic system implemented on modern vehicles including the e90. All F30's now use electric steering.

No, actually. Active Steering (AS) is an independent, purely electric system. AS is a combination of electric motor and planetary differential spliced into the steering shaft. By itself, AS doesn't in any way involve anything hydraulic.

AS is an optional component in E90 cars. My car, for example, has no AS, just a traditional hydraulic boost applied to the steering rack.

Cars with AS use it for ratio changing, while boost is still provided by traditional hydraulic system. These two systems are applied to two completely different physical points: AS works in the steering shaft, while hydraulic boost is applied to the steering rack.

I didn't come from a Honda to BMW but I did come from a 05 ford focus zx3 hatchback to a 325i. I still own the focus and drive it from time to time but yes it's night and day between the two. We all know the 325i isn't the fastest but coming from something that does not has very much power the 325 has decent power. I also too really like the heavy steering. When going back to the focus I have to adjust my driving since the steering is much more lighter. Also RWD over FWD ftw lol

Having driven several different japanese and european models, these are my observations:

japanese cars are more comfortable at slow speeds (city driving)... easier to drive, and the suspension smoothens out the road, giving it a plush feeling.

european cars are not very comfortable to drive a slow speeds. however, once i am on the highway, it feels supremely safer... it feels planted to the road more, like it was built for high speeds (which it is)/

I was talking exacting the same thing with a friend last night !
Really is smoother driving my Civic in the City than the 325i, but on the HW the bimmer handle much better

I still don't know how these two cars are compared. Aside from the Civic being newer, all aspects of your 325i is superior compared to your Civic. Without question.

But then again, some people might want to drive a Civic over an e90

The Civic was my first car, been driving it for 3 years, maybe i got used to it. What i don't get used with the bimmer are :

1- Steering Wheel (Heavier)
2- Brake (Not really smooth, as i mentioned before)
3- Lack of interior room

but i gotta say the interior room size is too small comparing to the Civic.

Yea, I guess it does take time to get used to. For me, I got acquantainted to my car immediately as I drove a BMW SUV in the past so everything was "as-expected"

The main purpose of the heavier steering is to give you tighter and more precise turn. Being a sports sedan, you can expect that braking and transmission will be a bit rougher as compared to a normally family sedan like the Civic. I cant really comment on the interior room but they are roughly the same size (compact sedans).

I'm sure that once you get used to it, you'll enjoy your car a lot more

went from 99 acurra tl to 11 e90 328i
brakes are a big difference from the two that i will say. takes awhile to get the feel for it i will agree.
sterring feel was a little heavier, but tl did have better feel than accord did of same year. in 12 years of ownship, i replaced key switch twice (known problem) motor mount, timing belt and water pump (only beacuse of age of belt). but it kept on eating brake discs from some reason.
hope the 3er gives me as little problems
i still miss it.
but i love my 328 more.

I never owned a asian car but all american, and it was great to just go to a place like sears and get an oil change and not have to worry about the car. People will compare any car. Honda people will argue sometimes also that just do some suspension work and your in a happy medium without getting a bmw.

Look at the new accord. Get the coupe, it's got 270 hp and you can get it fully loaded for like 30k. You have to go fully loaded to fully loaded. And it's known for bulletproof reliablity. That's always tempting to buyers. Spent 30k for a fully loaded car that it's too slow, or 50k on a bmw for a little more speed and handling and less reliability. That extra speed and handing isnt worth 20k to alot of people.

I have a friend who just got a 2009 328i coupe and he's drooling over the new accord. He came from an 18 year old integra before this. If the BMW would last people those types or years, with let's say a little more maintenance, it wouldn't even be a competition.

My wife has an 09 Civic with a 4 speed auto and I have an 08 328i with a 6 speed manual and ZSP. I've driven both cars regularly for 3 1/2 years.

The biggest differences I've noticed are:
- Noise: BMW is much quieter
- Weight: BMW feels heavier
- Luxury: BMW is more luxurious.
- Ride: Civic rides better.
- Power: BMW is much more powerful.
- BMW gets 25 mpg, Civic gets 30-33.
- Civic feels bigger and more open inside.
- BMW handles better but the Civic handles pretty well for an economy car.
- BMW makes much better sounds.

Is the BMW worth twice as much to buy and maintain?

exactly. We all didn't get to the point we could afford a BMW by throwing money away

Came from a 99 Acura CL 2.2 to 2011 E90 x-drive. Difference day and night. Steering was much heavier, but more to my liking because now you could feel the road. Engine power much better than the small 2.2 L. Although I really did like how the Acura CL drove, the power was really laking (didn't go for the V6 because wanted manual). Acura car seat sits little lower and more rake (and was very comfortable, so that took getting used to but love the BMW sport seats. At higher speeds, the BMW gives tons more handling confidence...the faster you go, the more planted the BMW feels.

Honda died to me a long time ago, basically when the RSX came out. Or when they cancelled the next s2000 and nsx to build the CRZ and Accord Crosstour. DIED.

Never looked back to those cars since I got my 335. I previously had a S2000 and TSX. I totaled my TSX (damage not bad but enough to total) and was so happy to do so. As an enthusiast the only other brand that was appealing to me was Porsche, but even used Cayman's are still too much for me to justify the price.

If anything, MAZDA is the BMW of Japan. My Gf has a 10' Mazda 3 Sport, and while the 2.5 4 cyl is in no way a refined engine, the feel of the car is very BMW, the chassis is very well tuned to the suspension and the steering a perfect even though its electric.

If you think that going from a Honda to a BMW is somewhat confusing, and let me assure you , it definitely will take some time to get used to better brakes, sport feeling of the wheel, seats, visibility the list goes on.
But if you think this was hard, well.... in a years time go on and try to drive ANY asian car, and you will see things that you have never noticed before, the noise, lack of stability, not so soft to touch dash and panels , not so nice sound system, and the lights that actually don't let you see at night ( even though they are on ), the list goes on again.
Good luck with the purchase, hopefully you will see what the rest of us saw.
