Getting transmission fill plug off

how should I go about it on the all wheel drive version of the e90? The extra drive shaft is in the way.

How much of a pain is it going to be to remove it? I only pretty much need to drop the one side.

Thanks

Make sure you just use the right size allen key. I used one and lots of wd-40. Make sure the key is snugly inside the fill plug and then put a ton of force on it and you should be able to get it off. You could use a hammer and hit the allen key but you have a chance of dislodging the key from the fill plug and stripping it.

you take a look at this?
You might have the GM transmission.

As usual, fill plug first, then drain the transmission.

I don't have an xi, but I don't think it's too hard to remove.

There are 4 bolts on each side. The bolts are one-time use, you'll need to replace any of them that you loosen.

If you were to remove the entire driveshaft you'd want to mark each side of it and the flanges with paint or a marker or something to align it correctly when you put it back. If you're only dropping one side, then it shouldn't be able to move anywhere. You might still mark it just to make sure the marks line up again when you put it back.

Is there a part number for the bolts?

Does this help?

EDIT: sorry just realised you're in the USA OP so it's probably an AT, not MT...

You need a special stubby socket driven Allen.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B004ZD...ds=lisle+69000

The one above can use a socket wrench or you can put a normal wrench on it. Insert it into the Allen notch and then turn it by pushing the wrench.

Put in your car's information here and check: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/

In the Drive Shaft section.

It looks like they're 26117529387, but put in your specific production date to be sure.

According to Bentley, the torque spec is 15 ft/lbs plus 45 degrees.

Cut down the Allen key with a dremmel/ grinder/ hack saw & slide a wrench over it before you put it place.

Yeah I thought of that but I don't think it'll work without taking the front part of the drive shaft off or lowering it.

I'm going to take pics and write up another DIY for xi models.

I'm pretty sure there is just 4 E12 torx bolts holding the drive shaft, as another member posted earlier that you're not suppose to re use th drive shaft e torx bolts. Does anyone have a part number for them ?

I would goto BMWfans to get part numbers. I will look and see if my Bentley Repair manual addresses this DIY or not. Stay tuned......

I'm trying to remove th drive shaft but it rolls as I'm trying to use a socket on it. I can't figure out what to use to hold it in place while I'm trying to remove the e torx

Just checked the Bentley Repair Manual and it does not list a special tool etc.

http://www.mechanicstoolsandbits.com...FQQEaQod4IwOKw

I found this tool. I know Assenmacher specializes in tools for European cars.

I got everything off.

Now I'm having a problem after filling the transmission with fluid and putting a new pan and filter on. After filling through fill hole it started seeping out so I put back in the fill plug tried starting the car to go through the gears and it won't come out of park and there is no play in the shifter

Any idea?

I am at a loss there. I have never had the transmission just seize up after putting in new trans fluid in and trying running it though the gears prior to adding more trans fluid.

When you pulled the pan filter off, did you check the hole where the filter neck slides into for a gasket? Often times a gasket will get caught up in there.

No I didn't check I didn't have much clearance under the car.

But I re used the bolts from the pan and ended up snapping 2 of them by over tightening them. So now I have to go get an ez out set and extract them. I'm pissed cause I just threw 3.5 liters of transmission fluid in there and gonna have to drain it and it's gonna go to waste.

Unless I have so,etching clean to catch it. The ZF fluid is expensive
