In night driving the issue is seeing things like pedestrians (particularly children), curb lines, posts, utility poles. Tinting will reduce the drivers ability to see them. Poor lighting at night, combined with bright, high contrasting oncoming headlights and window tinting are an invitation for disaster.
Speaking from experience, one person says, "I have had my windshield tinted since 2002. Not just a strip. The full windshield. During that time I've always had 5% on the sides and rear and I've always had either 50% or 35% on the windshield. Most of the cars had 35% but the Prius has 50% because the place I brought it to wouldn't do 35%. ...The only statement from above that was true was that it can indeed become an issue if you run someone over. You would be surprised at how easy it is to do that when you are tinted and it is night time. On well lit roads, it isn't a big deal but in dark residential areas, it is almost impossible to see out my sides at night. I usually have to keep the windows down. If you run someone down and kill them and you have an illegally tinted windshield, you will probably run into a legal nightmare." |

There is a reason it's illegal. It puts cops at risk. It also puts other drivers at risk because they can't see you when they approach at a right angle (an intersection) to help assess what you're doing. Last edited by wilbur_the_goose; 10-08-2015 at 07:59 PM.. |

I don't see any need to tint the front. If the other windows are tinted I looks the same as them without being tinted and that is the only one that can really affect night vision. Not necessary and that is over the line as most cops think. |

My tinted windows put cops at risk how exactly? And I have indicators to show if I'm turning or not. Who tries to look in at the driver to see what they're doing?!?

Turn indicators indicate your 'intention' to turn, but they do not indicate to another driver or a pedestrian or bicyclist that you have SEEN THEM, and eye contact is a significant indication that you are aware of their presence. |

Um,
1. unless the guy you are giving advise to IS a scoff law as you put it, there isn't any extra danger to cops with him getting tint. 2. Many states allow tint of varying degrees for door windows. Florida is 30% 15% is what I have. I have had 1 ticket for tint in 221,000 miles and that was because it was a rookie riding with a sergeant who was doing everything by the numbers. 3. When I have been pulled over, I suggest doing what I always do. Turn off radio and car Roll down window Hold license and carry permit in both hands out the window. Police appreciate this as you are showing them there is no threat. Your hands are empty, you have your paperwork. They can relax. You aren't going to be a problem. Then be polite, courteous, and straight with them. More often than not they will let you go. So if you're doing this, I do not see a problem with having tint and the cop who pulls you over probably won't either. |

Fundguy1 - well said. I had a friend who was an officer, and he recommended doing almost the same thing if I was ever stopped.
I incorrectly assumed that every state had laws against tinting. Sorry about that. But the thing that bugs me is when it's so dark that I can't see what the other driver is doing. As I've gotten older (I'm > 50 now), I've gotten a LOT more defensive in my driving, and it's served me well. |

There's different tint lawso in every state. Typically more southern higher tint allowed as the cars heat up more without it. 15% is what an SUV has on all back and backseat windows stock. Cops in florida and many other states tolerate this for front door windows. 5% is limo. Many states allow 5% on rear and backseat windows. That's what you can't see through. That's illegal for front seat door windows everywhere.

I had 35% on my car before (silver/black interior). I went with ceramic with my new car (white/beige interior). I could choose between 30 or 40%. I went with the 40 this time as the 30 seemed just a little too dark on white for me personally. I think the 40 came out perfect. You can tell its tinted during the day but can still see inside with hardly any problem. I'm more concerned about heat rejection now than privacy so 40% ceramic was a good choice for me. I'm 26 btw so even though I'm still young, I actually like 40%. At night, I can see perfectly fine and others shouldn't have an issue seeing inside as well.

To the OP, look into the Ceramic Tints, they cost more but the block out more heat! I tinted my windshield with a very light tint (used Johnson tints).
I went with 35 on the back three windows (I have a Coupe) I went with 45 on the front side windows, (there is already a factory tint on them) I went with 75 on the windshield and with the black interior there is NO WAY to tell the windshield is tinted Read about it here: http://www.johnsonwindowfilms.com/au...cts/insulatir/ great stuff! I would ONLY ever buy ceramic tints going forward... |
