This happened to a co worker of mine, Hyundai Veloster, 6 months old, parked in traffic and it exploded all over him and his young daughter.

Showered them with glass

Do you think it may be related to heating/cooling cycles both inside and outside the car coupled with manufacturing flaws?

Shitty glass.

Even OEM BMW glass is made in China now.

Well, technically they use many producers - but the original glass on our E91 was made in China.

I think it was just poor glass quality.

It was early morning, car had been sitting all night, so interior and exterior wouldn't have been very different, he was about 10mins into the drive from home toward his daughters school, stopped at light,so its not like he hit a pothole, or it was extremely hot or cold outside etc.

He said it sounded like an explosion, it was so loud.

I wonder if chassis flexing is a contributing factor.

As the article noted, the increasing size and complexity of the sunroofs MIGHT be a factor - look at the Veloster, the roof is all curved glass going from edge to edge.

[That doesn't explain, however, why regular simple rectangular panels explode every now then... ]

The sunroof on an acquaintance's F32 just exploded yesterday. Weather has been mild (8-12C) and raining so I don't think the issue is temperature related. Scary stuff.
