E90 320D with Style 161s
Currently running bridgestone potenzas 225/45/17 on front and 255/40/17 on theback NON RUNFLATS



My rear tyres im having trouble finding replacements for, nobody seems to have a pair in part worn ( i have my own reasons for going part worn and ive done my research regarding what to look for)


I've been told you can also put 225/45/17 on the rear aswell and this seems to be the case when looking online.

1) What difference would this make to my car in real world driving, city driving, motrway driving etc

2) would the 255 be better in snow as they are wider tyres hence more traction?

Thinner tyres are better in snow.

Really should fit the correct sizes, all it will mean is the rears will have a slight stretch as I'm guessing your alloys are staggered fitment and wider at the rear.

No real difference real world, doubt you'd notice the slight loss in grip really. The slight stretch might make them stiffer than a 255 would be so maybe a slight loss in ride comfort but it would be miniscule.

I cant even find any photos of a 225/45/17 on an 8.5, so it's not considered a stretch worth even photographing, so it will be slight, if at all.

What are the reasons for part worn as the thread may make more sense then to what your trying to achieve...

Oh my reasons are im at uni, so firstly cant afford a full set of decent new tyres for.my car, and i refuse to put budgets on the car due to their lack of wet grip generally

Secondly, ive been through a lot of tyres in regards to hitting potholes and getting sidewall bulges so i stopped buying them altogether as safe part worns make more sense

I wouldn't put 225 on the rears...In fact, I really don't understand why people would want "thinner" tyres for the rears. Even 255 for a 335 feels like it's "lacking" rubber contact with the road...

All fast sports cars porkys/ gtr/ astons etc....run on/ above 285 tyres ...


No idea why AMG puts on 255 tyres on a 457bhp car????!!!

Thats true, thats why i be very careful with what i buy

For my front i got two Contis, 7-8mm tread, no puncutre repairs, no sidewall damage and no chips either and make sure they arent retreads or remolukds (althought ive been told these are just as safe due to testing and meeting eu standarda)

They are my main worries, i guess if these are fine they should be pretty safe for normal use

I know what you mean, if i could fit chunkier tytes i would its just trouble getting hold of these, especially as a pair part worn

i think u are better off with new budget tyres then going for used ones as safety is concerned.

Cars are over-tyred these days, the GT86 proves that. It runs the same tyres as a Prius.

have the 161s and when it was time to change tyres I went for 235s all around. This way I got rid of the run flats and went for continental contiseal tyres (self sealing in case of a puncture) - vw first used them on the passat cc - and I am now able to rotate the tyres (not the wheels) for a more even wear.

eBay has loads of tires in that size in pairs.
You can check build date if you worried about safety due to age (google it).
Most tires are pressuer tested and you can get the fitters to check them for you.
Stick to 6mm+ as 2mm is roughly when you change so you're only getting 4mm of use out of a 6mm tire.
Go part warns over budget every time.

I thought the reason for them going with the thinner tyres on the GT86 was so there's less traction at the rear thus making it easier to get sideways?

Partially, the thinner tyres means it has a lower grip limit, making it more fun at safe speeds.

The e90 understeers slightly, putting 225's on the back actually improves it from a 'drivers' point of view, the wider tyres are there to make it feel 'safer'.

I have used loads of part worns, if you get one that is only a few months old with 7mm or so you know they are going to be pretty good. You can see any problems anyway.

Just don't mix treads on a BMW, the handling goes very funny 95% of the time.
