335i with mods is faster and cheaper. M3 has most things done and has bigger fenders for bigger tires and upgraded interior etc but needs a ton of money more to get real power. Depends on your budget and what you want. I chose n54 335i.

the only reason people buy a 335 is cause they cant afford an m3. get an m3.

For me the selling point on the 335 was that is fast and has the AWD option. When I snows I unfortunately don't have the luxury to sit my ass safely home by the fireplace.

OP, it depends; what are you looking for?
I've owned multiple M cars and bought the 335 vs the M3. Many reasons: 1. M-Tax on the insurance. It cost me more to insure my e36 M3 than my 335i when I bought it. 10 years newer more horsepower and more expensive to replace, but the M3 cost 40% more to insure. 2. Engine replacement. That V8 will need a rebuild someday and it will be expensive to rebuild. Think upwards of $11K. Does that scare you? It should. My e30 M3 engine was $8K on the low end to rebuild. Yes, $8K to rebuild a four banger. Now with the 335i you have fuel pumps, bearing ledges and oil filter housing leaks. Along with the electric water pump. YMMV but neither is a cheap car long term but that V8 will cost more. One last thing..... That V8 howls like a stuck pig at high RPM and nothing sounds quite like it. 8-)

IMO the performance gap between the M3 and 335i doesn't justify the cost unless you are going to regularly track the car. 335i has a ton of power stock, and can exceed M3 levels with a few mods, plus as mentioned it's far cheaper to insure, maintain, and operate.

I chose the 335i because I wanted to be able to mod it without spending $12,000 on a supercharger. That being said, I've been going back and forth about buying an E90 M3 because of the sound of that V8. Drive them both and see what you like better. If you're not planning on modding, I would go M3 without question. Or if you are planning on modding, make sure you've got $20 grand to play with!

I used to love the M3 and but now that I have a 335i with jb4 and other mods I couldn't see myself paying an extra 10K+ for the M. I never track the car so no use for the M. I would rather have a fast 335i for a daily than the M

The M3 has a real suspension, where even the sport suspension on a 335 is lacking. Also you get the LSD. But for about $3500 you can correct both deficiencies. I've done the LSD on my car and now have Bilstein B8 shocks. Still need to do the bushings when I gat a chance.

Again it's all personal preference, if you have the heart of a young kid that loves modding and having a lot of options, go with the 335i. If you're more into the heritage of the M line and love keeping cars original and not doing too much to the car, the M3 is the way to go.

What is your definition of "someday" ? There are a ton of E9x M3's with well over 100,000... Sure there are rod bearing "issues" with those engines, but for the most part, that V8 and the e9x is as reliable as ANY M car ever built. Those engines are pretty bulletproof... I mean, yea if you abuse the hell out of it and track it all the time, any engine like that will need rebuilt, but everyday DD driving, that engine should last a long, long time... I'd like you to find a higher HP or better handling car that is any more reliable than an E9x M3, or a more "high strung" engine like the M3's that is more reliable. Merc or Audi? I don't think so... anything American made? Give me a break. (Can you tell that my next car is going to be an E92 M3 with less than 50,000 miles)
