Hi,

My OEM battery seems to be dieing after 6 years of use and I am considering options.

1: Replacing OEM ($350 at the dealer)
2: Replacing it at my mechanic with an Aftermarket BOSCH battery ($250)

What do people think about these costs and can anyone tell me if there is any reason to go to the dealer and get OEM over the BOSCH and if so which BOSCH battery is compatible with an e90 325i?

As long as you get the battery registered (coding) following the replacement, you'll be fine either way.

Just do it yourself.. I put a duralast silver 3 year warranty for 127.00 They are made by johnson control.. Only 3 companines make batteries anymore. Napa has a battery that will fir your car for 119.99 made by exie or whatever.

Then take it to an indy shop and have them register it.. Shouldn't cost more than 50 bucks for them to do it. Some might do it for less or free if you go to them on the regular.

Oh and make sure you put it in.. Don't just take them the after market because they will charge you a full battery install fee.

My total cost was 127.00 because my indy shop reg the battery for free for me btw.

Bosche batteries suck btw.. Deka AGM's are the best but you have to reprogram to use those :C

If you have the Bav Tech tool, you can register it yourself. I bought it for that purpose. Practically pays for itself.

BMW uses two battery suppliers
Bosch who makes batteries under the Excide name
Douglas is the other battery supplier
I think as long as you stay within the AH requirements give or take a few amp-hours you will be fine. You can register your battery with a K+CAN OBDII cable and the software our generous poster provided in the coding section of this forum

After this you should be all set. If you get a huge difference in AH rating you need coding but stay with in reason say less than 10% my guess is you will be fine...

Napa batteries are Excide and only cost 119.99 for the car.

From my understanding reprograming only needs to be done if you change to an AGM battery.

I just replaced my 2006 330i battery I was convinced I would need to register battery after getting a replacement from sears.... Turns out for 2006 battery doesn't need registering if you stick with same battery. No error codes.

It's confusing as they used three different batteries and there all interchangeable sometimes depending on what vendor they will tell you that such and such battery will not work when it does.

I also need to replace my battery but i cant decide wether to register it or not. according to this post we dont need to register it, http://www.justanswer.com/bmw/4qd9b-...2007-335i.html. Does anyone know where to buy an oem battery by any chance? most online sites dont ship it because it hazardous. After you check out they will send you a cancellation of transaction within 5 mins.

sigh why pay 200 for a battery that is not even rated all that highly?

It is talking about re-coding not repeat not registering your battery.
You do need to register your battery if you want the BMW Inteliigent Battey Sensor (IBS) to provide the current algorthim for a new battery not one that is currently in there.
The choice is up to you but you can register yourself as I referenced the site above. I have done it and it is easy to do.
What happens if you don't? No idea but most likely will not last as long as. The saving in not registering the battery might allow you to pay for a new battery say every 3 years.

No matter what you read Bosch makes batteries for BMW under the Excide name. Douglas is the other supplier. You will not find anyone but a dealer selling the OEM batteries and that dealer must be local since I don't know of one dealer that will ship to include getbmwparts.com.
You have a $50,000 car so what battery you use is up to you.
If you change your own battery be careful so you don't short out the IBS. Also there is a good likelihood of blowing a fuse located behind the glove box so if you don't have instruments when you restart your car check the fuse box there.

As long as you are careful you should be fine...

I wish I knew the exact one but it was a Walmart Maxx branded battery. I used their instore lookup thing at the battery aisle.

Looked the same as the old one. The clamp in the trunk fit a little different but not hard to get it to work.

As far at the recode/register issue... I know when you change types of battery (standard, agm, gel) it becomes a big deal.

But if you are sticking with the same type of battery the recode/register thing resets the adaptation so that the new battery will charge more optimally. The walmart battery has a 3 year warranty, so if it takes a shit I am returning it. I haven't had issues.

You know what you guys can do is just get an oil change or something with it.. Most indy shops will clear codes and what not with some service.

Same here. Walmart battery made by Johnston controls. Two years no issues and no register

I purchased a battery from walmart and never registered it. Never had any problems.
