Oil Cap Replacement - N52

Apologies for the novice question in advance..

My oil filler cap developed a leak on my 2006 330i. Purchased a new cap from Pelican and I'm trying to figure out how to get the whole cap off. I turn the cap counterclockwise to release the top, but how do I remove the bottom? Do I just continue to turn the cap and it will release like the top, or do I just pull it straight up over the lip on the valve cover? My current cap looks like its been through WWII, so trying to change caps without damaging the new one.

I had the same issue a couple months ago. You're supposed to be able to pry off the bottom from one corner while the cap is open. I found that didn't work and just pried until the plastic broke and the new one snapped on no problem.

its easier with the cosmetic silver plastic cover off. but yea twist and pull, theres a trick to it and it kind of comes off diagonal

New cap came in, so I tried my luck at removing the old one. Tried the twist and pull method but to no avail. I see the notches on the valve cover that hold it in, but there are no cuts or notches in the cap that would allow it to release when twisted a certain way(that i can see).

Is there a good safe way to do this, or should I try to gently pry the old one off with a flat head? Thanks again.

If you pry the old one off, just make sure to stuff a clean shop rag in the filler hole to prevent any broken plastic from getting into the valve train.
