BMW's most succesful engine

As the name suggests what is BMW's most succesful engine they have ever made? I know there is alot of hype about the N54 and it has won numerous awards but is there any other succesful engine that BMW is renowned for?

Don't overlook the 500cc boxer (motorcycle engine). Some might say the F1 1.5L turbo from the eighties. I really like the S54B32 from the E46 M3.

FYI - if you're a reader, here is a set of books from BMW Dimensions that covers the history of their engines up to about 2000 or so: http://www.autobookworld.com/shopexd.asp?id=2350

PS - I found a set cheaper than the listed reference. They're now on the bookshelf. ; -)

Perhaps the M50? It is my favorite at least because it spawned so many awesome engines...leading to the S54B30.

If not that, then perhaps the P86/9. If not that then the S70/2.

It just sounds sooo good. Maybe the V8 is more efficient, idc. This engine just sounds so unique.
