Bmw 3 series vs BMW 1 series on ice and snow

I had parked my car on an open car park, next to a brand new BMW 1 series. The car park was ice covered (like a sheet of ice) since it has been minus 7 degrees Centigrade for the past few days and on top of that it rained last night! The BMW one series owner tried backing his car and the rear wheels spun furiously. He tried it a few times with the same result. He was forced to rock the car a few times and another spin before he managed to back it out of that icy car park. I just backed out without effort, without any wheel spin and I have just ordinary 3 year old winter tyres without studs (Nokian Rsi). I am sure he had proper winter tyres since it is the law here. Is BMW one series that bad in ice? I am very curious to know. If I see that guy again in our hospital car park, I am going to ask him, if he had shut down his traction control, ESP or something. I just can not believe what I saw.

Definitely something more going on here than 1-series / 3-series differences. I can see there being some difference between the two, but not so drastic. I'm guessing tires, driver, or some feature of the ice (say a small ice ridge built up behind his tires or perhaps his car was on very smooth ice vs textured elsewhere in the lot) that created a significant difference.

The 3er is heavier overall can lead to better traction.

I looked very carefully on the ground and there was no difference in the surface, both our surfaces were shiny and had no ridge. I guess that the weight has some thing to do with this or the traction controll or the ESP had been switched off in his car. I have not seen rear wheels of modern cars (with traction controll etc) spin so fast as his did. Even when he managed to back out, the rear wheels were still working overtime and spinning. After pulling out from the parking place he actually waited in his car and saw me pull out effortlessly! I hope he turns up tomorrow too so that I can ask him. I have to know!

On the side note, this E91 that I have with Nokian tyre has been great car even during snow storm and icy road. It just refuses to behave like the old rear wheel driven car. We have a sloping driveway which is packed with snow and some times ice in winter and it has no problem pulling on that or any other stretch of road that I have been on for the last three years. Hats off to BMW!

Maybe you have thinner wheels than he does. Wider wheels have less weight per square inch than thinner wheels/tires.

Do you think a 200lb difference (5-6%) would really make as significant difference in tire traction as the OP observed?

Consider that a full tank of gasoline is half that weight.

Most likely not. I guess it is either the difference in the wheels or the condition of the ice.

prob weight.

E91 touring (OP's car) has more weight on the back wheels. That too, wheel width can affect it a lot. narrower = more weight per square inch

Maybe he didn't ease on the gas, breaking traction right away?
