can i stream iphone over usb?

my 335 is an early 2011. when i plug my iphone 5 into usb port in center console it says "reading" then it says something like "unsupported device."

is there any way i can get this to work? my goal is to stream pandora from phone into audio system, i dont even care if its not bluetooth. is there a software upgrade, a special cable or some other kind of connector device to make this possible (aftermarket)?

Why do you want aftermarket solution? To me there is nothing better than OEM. No aftermarket solution can give you an OEM integration.. IMHO

I agree that OEM is awesome, but it looks like I need to get Combox and BMW apps which would be close to $2,000 installed. That's a LOT of money.

Use the headphone jack? Costs about $5, which will cover the cost of many, many "plug it in" events

2011 should already have a combox installed, iirc. That's what runs the USB port in the center console.

I have bluetooth in my 2010, and there's no way to get audio to the BMW (other than for telephone calls), no?

This does not work in my car. The bluetooth is connected for phone purposes only. That's OK, thanks to the cheap German, I have connected a mini plug to my iPhone and I can stream while I drive.

Does anybody know a good mechanism to attach my iPhone 5 to the dashboard?

Yep - My iPhone is paired with my car, but that only supports telephone calls. And the Waze app.

When Waze gives directions, it brings up the telephone iDrive screen, talks, and "hangs up".

I see you have a 2011...if you have the i-Drive you should have the combox iirc. Go to your Telephone settings click options and click bluetooth options...there should be a "Bluetooth Audio" option. If it's not there then you do not have the combox

If you don't have a combox and can't stream bluetooth, the next best thing is a blackberry sound bridge, very small, just plug into the center console, SUB for power, audio jack for audio and then pair with your phone and you can stream audio via bluetooth for about $60 bucks.
