Apparently you don't remember Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom with Marlin Perkins and Jim Fowler. While Perkins was pretty staid, Fowler was in the bush with enthusiasm and apparent recklessness much like Steve Irwin. No, Irwin wasn't the original but he did have his own style that took it to a higher level.

Over the years, Crocodile Hunter went downhill for me. The enthusiasm Irwin displayed seemed too dramatic and I felt he took too many undue risks. However, he did have a big impact on educating folks to the beauty of wild and dangerous animals and did so in an entertaining manner. His presentation showed that he loved his work, he loved animals, he loved nature as a whole, and he knew his subject. He will be missed. My sympathy to Terri and their children.

Stingrays are usually quite docile, and rarely use their barbs unless stepped on accidentally or attacked by sharks. Nonetheless, this shows that wildlife is often unpredictable and despite calculated precautions, can wreak havoc. This incident does sound a bit like a freak accident in which the ray was reportedly unprovoked, and of all places, Steve was nailed in the heart. He survived just long enough to pull the barb out.
His producer has said that the footage would be shown on television. I heard him on the news today.

"Damn no good for nothing Stinray"

Anyway, to be stab in the heart by a stingray, that's like a million in one chance that could happen..I guess it's his time to go Kind of like that movie, final destination, when it's your time, you just can't escape fade. Wonder how good people like that oftern die young...meanwhile..people like Strom Thurmond gets to live close to 100...hmmm (Sorry for my off-topic rant )

Still can't believe it. I loved watching this guy on The Animal Channel. One of the few shows I can watch in it's entirety. RIP Mr. Irwin.

He's had a lot of close calls. If you go to his animal planet web site, you can download many videos of his close calls. In one, he and his team were trying to move a croc from one part of the zoo to another (the croc apparently out-grew its home) and somehow its mouth got free and it sunk it's teeth way into Steve's leg.

And there he was, saying "It's not her fault, it's my mistake. I don't blame her..I should have secured her jaws better. Now I'm going to bleed a little...so be it. Poor little thing...she was just doing what she had to. She thought I meant her harm."

You've got to respect a guy like that. I get pissed off when my dog growls at me! You can say what you want, but steve really, truly had a sincere love for all wildlife, and I really don't see many people like that these days with such passion.

It's just really sad...what a terrible twist of fate for a guy that dedicated his life to preserving wildlife. Then again, I do agree that he may have taken too many risks at times. Regardless, I'll miss him!

a big loss for human kind. he was a conservationist, entertainer and naturalist. my kids were always fascinated by his bravery and enthusiasm with crocs and snakes. he was a ' real TV uncle' . my heart goes out to his family and the australian zoo.

‘Crocodile Hunter’ Irwin gets private funeral
Australian TV naturalist reportedly to be buried at family’s zoo

Updated: 9:41 p.m. PT Sept 9, 2006
SYDNEY - A private funeral service was held for Australian TV naturalist Steve Irwin on Saturday and he will be buried at his family’s zoo in the northern state of Queensland, local media reported.

Irwin’s father, Bob Irwin, had declined a government offer for a state funeral for his son.

Irwin, known as the “Crocodile Hunter” after his popular TV documentaries which aired around the world, was killed six days ago by a stingray barb to the chest while diving on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.
