So I am getting my motor replaced with one from an 08 335i with 49k on it.

The motor is coming with turbos, but chances are these either will already have waste gate rattle or will develop it.

What are my options while I have the turbos out to get rid of the possibility of wastegate rattle. Is replacing the turbos the only thing I can do? I would like to replace the turbos, but honestly money is pretty tight with having to pay to replace the entire engine.

I'm not an expert, but I would say if you can get the new Turbos or whatever other part is, this would be the best time because you will be paying extra money for new turbos at this time, labor should be same.

I actually just found that you can order the actuators by themselves. For some reason I thought you couldn't.

I did read about the actuators being adjusted with a special machine at the factory, so idk if replacing them would be a good idea or not.

I'm more curious as to why you need to replace a motor that's only 6 years old for another that is 6 years old. Unless you're swapping it into your e46? :P

Car is an 08 with 61k on it. I was driving along last week and a knocking sound started from the engine. I couldn't figure out what it was, so I took to a shop. They said the sound is coming from the bottom end. We pulled the oil filter and it is full of metal particles. At this point it's not worth paying them to dig into the engine to find the exact cause, but it's pretty clear the motor is shot. No idea what caused it. It wasn't over reved or anything. I only had it for 3 weeks, so idk what could have happened in its past, but it looks like most of its service was done at the dealer.

I am going to keep the old motor and tear it down to figure out what is wrong in it.

with the motor out... i would replace all of the vacuum lines with silicon ones, they have better thermal properties then the stock rubber ones with the heat shielding. lot of times the rattle comes from vacuum leak that goes uncheck and as it gets worse people start messing with the wastegate before checking all of the lines. this is something you can do and it's fairly cheap.
since the motor is already out... im not sure how your funding is but if you can afford it, it would be a good time to upgrade to RB turbos, they have stock turbo housings so they will bolt up without issue but the internals have been redesigned and also the wastegate has been upgraded to better ones too.

I would like to go to rub turbos, but I don't have the money for that with paying for a new engine.

I am gonna do the rb put valve though. I have a list going of other parts I'm going to replace as well.
