Leak behind driver and passenger seats?

I washed my car today and for the first time in a month are so, I took out my floor mats and cleaned them. When I took out the rear mats, both of them were a little wet on the top, outer corners. The floor in front of both mats was damp only within about 2 square inches of the corner. There is no water under the seats or even on the carpeted slope towards the door. Could this be a bad door seal(despite the lack of water close to the door opening) or is it something worse under the car that is letting water in? It's also a California car, so there shouldn't any rust or anything like that.
