I had this car just over a week, and this happens...

As the title says, I've owned this car just over a week.

The weather finally has let up for a few days straight without rain or snow, so I decide to take it to a car wash.

When I arrived at home and wanted to admire my freshly cleaned car, I find this on the back bumper, drivers side...

A loonie sized chunk is missing....

Suggestions on where I can go from here....?

EDIT: Any suggestions for a temporary repair? cover up? Cause, let's be honest... Pink spot on a dark blue car is quite noticeable.

Looks like someone kissed your bumper while pulling into a parking spot next to yours. Is it paint left on your car or is paint missing? Not sure if BMW primer is that color?

maybe just the lighting, but there should be no layers of pink in the OEM paint system on a blue car, if you really see pink under there, that would indicate a previous repair and that would be why the paint may have come off.

Also - if you want to admire your beautiful paint, stop going to the car wash as they make your paint much less beautiful!

Honestly it looks like the car wash took a chunk out of your car.

Was it an automated wash or a hand wash?

If it's automated then there's the reason.
I would absolutely never take my car to an automated wash. Those things scrape and scratch and chip your paint all the time.

Hand washing a car in Canada during Winter is quite.... cold. lol. Hand wash > Auto wash; always.

Ergh.. I don't even know. Carproof/Carfax has only showed me an estimate of approx 3800 dollars when I bought the car. I had taken the car to the mechanic one time, and he mentioned that the entire passenger side (both doors, fenders) has been repainted... Sounds like a hell lot more than the 3800 estimated on record...

It indeed was an automated Car wash; "Touchless" by Petro Canada. I've filed a car wash report at the gas station just now, and I'm about to contact them online through their website.

I had also visited a BMW Dealership (Town and Country), and got a quote of $1100 tax included, for the entire job. If it requires me to pay out of pocket.. all the more reason to get an mtech bumper... lol... Probably cheaper than repairing it at dealer anyways.

Suggestions on how I should approach the initial contact with Petro Can?

Nope, sounds around right for the 3800. I had a similar repair for 3900. Just light scratches really, would have been more if they needed to replace doors etc.

Ouch, that sucks and would just annoy the crap out of me for a good few days. You may want to check out places like Street Xtreme (out by Markville Mall area) or Alphawerx Auto (Thornhill Sq area) for a quote first on getting a repair before deciding to go full mtech (you're better off waiting till Feb anyway if you decide to do that).

ok. #1 if you care about your car that much, don't let other people wash your car. #2 go back to the car wash place and inform them on such issue. most car wash places have insurance to cover shit like this. #3 contact your credit card company to dispute the charge and inform them of the reason of your dispute.

If they painted both doors and the fender, chances are they did the bumper too, probably someone clipped it or previous owner backed it down the side of something. Typically if they repair instead of replace the bumper, they heat gun out the dents, fill and then paint. The filler doesn't flex as well as the bumper, so if the bumper flexes, especially when it is cold, the filler will just pop out and look like that. It cost more, but the proper repair is to replace the bumper and repaint.

I would talk to the car wash and see what they say - might pay for part of the repair at least, never hurts to ask.

The heat of car wash water can cause previously repainted areas to peel if the repair wasn't done right. Especially if its also cold outside. Or they just plain dented it.

If you have to fix it - that is the time as you will be paying for the paint either way!

No one will pay that for a good condition bumper let a long a damaged one.

OP I'd take a look at the classifieds section here and craigslist. These bumpers come up once in a while with guys making the change to mtech and they'll go quite cheap.
