i got continental sports contact II which i paid £70 per tyre from independent tyre specialist.

When my bmw dealer saw them at routine servicing i asked if rft's were one of bmw biggest mistakes and were they flogging a dead horse, they mumbled something and went to find the keys for courtesy car

£70 a tyre???!!!! Are they fake? What sizes are they and where from mate?
I've just fitted Goodyear Eagle Asymmetrc 2's to the rears at £400+. Fronts are £300+ for the two.
They are supposed to be one of the best tyres out there and have come first on many tests, hence why I bought them.

No not fakes, i think they were being discontinued but were brand new, i'm expecting its going to be more like £90 per tyre for my next tyres replacements. The conti's are only half worn now (18 months old) so i think maybe replace them in 2014 spring/summer time.

For me i prefer continental to goodyear or michelin - i think contis are best suited to german cars

(goes out to check car... 205/55 r16 conti sports contact 2) from here: http://www.kirkleytyresandwheels.co.uk/

conti 5ps are great but soft compound and wear quickly at the rear. I only got 10k miles from mine. I'm currently trying goodyear asym 2s and loving them so far.

I'm another thumbs up for the Goodyear Assy 2's. Very happy with them. Great in the wet and under heavy braking too.

Another vote for Goodyear Asym 2 - on my second set of rears and first set of fronts, having tried Conti 3 and GY Aym 1 before.

Will be sticking to Asym 2 for the foreseeable future...

Not wanting to hijack your thread mate, as this may be of a help to you too.

For those with GY Asym 2 tyres, how long was it before they started to 'work'? Ive had them on the rears now for 600miles and they are still slip sliding about

As with most summer tyres they're no good when it's cold (i.e. 5ºC or less).
Have all your 600 miles been in the recent colder weather?

Yes.

With those wheel widths, feel free to get some proper 245/275 tires.

Traction > Poke.

These are my PSS 245/275 on 8"/9" wheels:
