Tractor Tickover 320 Petrol ????

Hi Everyone, I am a bit concerned about the noise my 320 petrol makes when ticking over, it sounds more like a diesel than a petrol. I took it to Sytners the other week and they said its fine, but i am not so sure. My dads Mondeo ticksover quieter, you have to look at the revs to see its working.

Mines only done 20k and sounds like a tractor, is this normal ???

Only bought it in March from Sytner's Harold Wood. Last service was 2007 but its only done 6000 since then. I asked Sytner's to do it when I bought it but they said it wasn't ready for one yet as it had another 10000 miles to go by the on board computer.

I think they are slightly noisy at idle because of the valvetronic.

Why not get a second opinion from a different dealer?

Hi

I also have this concern. I have a 325 M Sport (LCI 2009), so a very different engine. The sound is almost like an exhaust leak at the manifold / engine end of the exhaust system. I've been meaning to go to my local Service Centre but not got around to it yet.

It's only noticable at low speed / low rpm (<15mph & <1,500rpm) - which is also why I've not taken it in yet. Otherwise performance is excellent, maintaining around 29mpg (after 3,500miles of running to a from work and the occasional long motorway runs).

Car was bought new build to order from Sytner High Wycombe in March.

Anyone else?

Cheers

The BMW engines do exhibit a fairly loud rapid ticking noise at idle. This is because the petrol engines now use direct injection and as a result use piezo fuel injectors at high pressure, in a similar way to some modern diesel engines. The ticking noise you hear at idle is entirely normal. My own engine sounds like a taxi when it's cold - really noisy and loud!! However, it's in 200% working order and revs completely smoothly all the way to the redline with no undue engine shimmies or stuttering. The noise is just characteristic of the fuel injectors. However without hearing each engine individually, it is impossible to tell if there any other extraneous noises that might give cause for concern. I would suggest that if the car is driving well, and there are no other issues that concern you, then the engine is in fine fettle and you should worry more about the driving rather than anything going wrong (which would be covered under warranty in any case).

I had a 55 reg 320i for 3 1/2 years and can't say mine ticked over like a diesel.
In fact I could stand an old 12 sided 3 penny piece on the engine on tick-over without it falling over. Thats the first engine I've ever had that I could do that since an old 1965 Hillman Minx 1600 cc. I believe one of the first mass produced 5 bearing crankshaft engines, Also, it had a low compression engine compared to nowadays. It had a very quite engine.

With the early 55 320i engine, BMW did not use the same piezo fuel injectors as they do now, so there was no apparent ticking noise.
