Smoky Diesels

I was wondering what others have experienced since tuning their BMW Diesels. Since popping a Spider Tuning box on to my 320D MSport tourer I've been really impressed with the gains in power, on the downside though I have noticed that on kickdown it can give some serious smoke out of the arse end which is something that isn't so good.

Now the 163bhp car doesn't have a DPF so it's bound to be a bit smoky when compared to the newer models. How many other 163Bhp owners have gone down the tuning route, what did you go for, Box or Remap and how much more smoke was there?

On the other side of the coin, do those of you with DPF who can't see the smoke not worry about damaging the DPF?

One more question, would going down the more metered route of a remap either Evolve or DMS cause less smoke as the fuelling is more controlled even though both give more BHP?

JJ is your car standard or tuned? if so did you go for a tuning box or remap? It's difficult to get an appreciation of how much smoke it's kicking out compared to other motors, maybe I should drive behind it with the Mrs driving................what a hideous thought!!!!

The amount of smoke some of these newer Audi/VW diesels chuck out sometimes is amazing! And diesels are a clean fuel?? Not in an Audi/VW TDi engine!

RE the DPF, I have the 163BHPmodel and it does have a DPF, I had the guy out to look at the car due a funny idle and it was on the screen that it commenced regeneration at 19500 miles. So some have them and some dont???

Mine, mapped. Doesn't smoke at all unless I open up about 80% throttle or more, but then smokes like a slag.

Diesel is a dirty habit

Mine is turned down the way. As I say the guy from BMW came out and said it started regenerated itself at 19500 miles, so this is confusing me a bit.

Where is it and what does it look like???

Think you can see it from the engine bay, you can on mine at least because it's a nice new shiny one.

When tuning diesels it is absolutly essential that the air filter is clean, the EGR valve is clean and finally the PCV valve/filter is clean.

This will go a long way to reducing your smoke emissions. You can of course fit an EGR by-pass too.

Hope I'm not stepping on toes here but here's the DPF on my motor (what you can see of it anyway!) and the associated sensors attached to it.

and a 'further back' photo...

An easy way to check if you have a DPF is to stick your finger in the tailpipe. If it comes out black you don't have one

If you pull the plastic top cover off (on E9Xd's) the DPF is right behind the turbo(s). Easy to see with a flashlight, and you have some wire/hose coming up to a block on the top left rear side of the engine. That's exhaust temp thermo couple, back pressure, and something else.

I believe i just witnessed a regeneration on mine (but never felt a thing):
On the E92 320d normal DPF in temp's are around 350-400C at motorway speeds (or slightly higher ). EGR rate is then about 25%. PS at above 90mph EGR is cut out (0%).
But last friday I was doing 75 mph and saw EGR was at 0% and DPF in at 600C. Varied speed some (down to 60 and up to 100) but temp and EGR did not move (except for a few C) for some 15 minutes. Then it all went back to 'normal'.
So to me it looks like regeneration is interval based and uses post injection. 300 mls have gone by since, haven't seen it again (but do loads of motorway)

Cars with a DPF - the tailpipes will remain clean internally, like these.....

OK, I have been told porky pies then. Just had a look and it dont look anything like yours Dr Dave.

I had the BMW mobile guy out (you know, the one in the 5 series) cause I had a funny idle and acceleration stutter he told me it was the DPF as it started regeneration at 19500 miles and it would run richer and hotter for a certain time till it was clean.

Now why would he tell me that??
