water/oil mixed in catch can
anyone experiencing oil/water mixture in their catch can. sometimes found under oil cap too. maybe caused by the cold weather? i only noticed the mixture sometimes. the other week. i drove my car to reno from san jose, ca. Parked it over night, checked my catch can in the morning and found water/oil mixed. so i pulled the procede out. drove it back home the next night, checked the can and still water/oil mixed. the next day drove to work (10mins away) checked the can.. its NORMAL (no water/oil mix).. wth??? a week later which is yesterday, drove to work checked the catch can, still normal but under the oil cap.. i found a little oil/water mixture... any ideas whats going on? or is this normal?

If you are seeing water vapors in the PCV system then this means that either your oil cap is not tightened and it is leaking or the PCV system is not sealed properly. I would check all the connectors in the PCV system that you touched while installing the OCC.
Here is an example of the same problem on a my previous car: http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?2526976

thanks for the inputs guys..
right when i found moisture in the catch can.. i checked all my lines right away.. all the lines were tightened and secured.. in the morning during cold starts.. the first 2 mins of idling. i can feel a little roughness.. maybe a slight misfire.. im not sure if thats normal, but i feel like my car has a power loss sometimes.. then again sometimes it drives normal... should i strip everything and bring it in to the dealer?? im still under warranty.. if i bring it in.. what should i tell them? |

That's my old car. Engine is still running like a champ!
Replace worn out and shrunk gaskets on the oil cap and it's fine!

That muck is the lack of oil temperature being hot enough to bake the moisture out of the oil.
There is a reason BMW opens the thermostat at 235...because after 212 water will boil off. Short distance driving without letting the oil warm up will cause it to get milky under the cap. Let the car get hot more often, beat on it some to get the oil temps up and change it more frequently. If you dont drive the car much at all change the oil every 3-5k miles, because moisture in the oil will degrade its qualities quickly. I have seen that so many times on E46s its not surprising at all lol.. |

there should be no moisture in the engine at all if you have water in your oil you should do a compression check to make sure you do nit have a head gasket going out .
