Winter tyres for my X6M in GVA
My X6M comes with factory installed 275/40R20 front and 35/35R20 rear. I understand the typical recommendation for winter is to go for small and narrower tyres to maximize traction. BMW recommended 19".
However, I found out that there are two winter tyre models that fit exactly my current wheel size. One if Pirelli Scorpion Ice-Snow Run Flat and the other is Toyo Open Country G-02 Plus. To me, I think the benefits of going for one of these are A) I can keep the same wheels and thus look (and I hate smaller wheels) and B) it saves the cost of having to buy new wheels. I live in West Vancouver (south of the HWY1 though) so there are some slopes that I need to drive on every day (not hugely steep). I don't know whether 275 front and 315 rear are a "dangerous" choice even if I drive more carefully in winter. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. |

I hooked up my friend with a X6 with a set of 20's Pirelli Scorpion Ice non RFT. I believe it was 275 all around? I dont remember, but all 4 tires were the same size. He went up to Whistler and plowed through the snow like a king. =)

it will be cheaper if you just buy your self used subaru or audi 4wd as a winter beater. I would not be surprised to see $5k+ for tires and $3k+ for rims

Thanks for the input. I got a quote of two 275/40R20 and two 315/35R20 Pir Scorpion Ice and Snow Run Flat for $2.2K. Not that expensive. The problem is finding new rims for this staggered set up. So I will likely use my existing BMW rims, unless I go for 275 on all four wheels and use some replica rims. I can't decide right now but will shop around a bit more in the coming week.

I also helped a friend get a set of OEM winters from bmw T+C and they came out to around 4500 all in, but the tires are 19" and from bridgestone 275 square setup if i remember correctly. As for the pirelli they run around 2k for a set of 20" staggared stock setup when i quoted it last year around this time. If you are looking for the tires I can link you up with a buddy of mine in Van, he should be able to get you good prices for rim and tire

I finally got the Pirelli Scorpion Ice and Snow 20" with a staggered setup, mounted onto my current rims. It costs me 2.2k including mounting and balancing. I went to Volco Tire in Richmond and their service is great. I also have my summer tires stored at their place at $60 a season. seems a good deal.

I know the OP said he didn't like going smaller and narrower, but quite honestly, I had 19's with a higher offset than stock (for the rear, as I bought a square set-up), and they didn't look bad at all. The stance would've been just as decent as stock if I slapped some spacers on the rear. But the set of rims plus tires only ran me $2500. That was me being lazy and having them deliver to my door. Shipping to Point Roberts would've saved me $200; with a gamble on saving an additional $200 on duty. Swapping them every winter was free at home, or $35 at the Kal Tire on Marine Driver. |
