Larger Dia Wheels + Bad Road Surfaces

I just wanted to see what people with 18s or 19s experience has been on poor road surfaces. I live in Minneapolis and recently had to replace one of the wheels on my '06 330 after a pothole bend - not something I'd like to do again! I am planning on ordering a E92 335 later in the year and ideally would like have the 19'' stlye 230 wheels. Anyone running a set of similar sized wheels with RFTs up north having issues? I can live with the hard ride just fine, but obviously not damage.

I really think the E92 needs at least 18s to fill those arches, so wouldn't like to have anything smaller, but the roads here are brutal, this year seems worse than ever!

Anyway, just hit another pothole last night that nearly knocked a filling out and thought I'd post.

Thanks

If you have bad roads then 18"s would be better due to having more sidewall. The roads primarily swayed my decision to take 18"s instead of 19"s on the M3.

18" are also to small!!! Deffinatly go with 19" cause it doesn't make a real big difference!

go with 19"

I live in CT and the roads are terrible, but I just put 19's on my E92 and LOVE THEM. No problems yet.

Yo! I'm in Minneapolis. I just got my 19's about two months ago, but so far I haven't had any problems. I know our roads are shit, and maybe I've been lucky but I haven't hit any bad ones yet. "knock on wood". No not that wood you perverts.

I am over concious of driving when it comes to potholes, etc. I was following a car too closely yesterday and SLAMMED into a pothole with the front, right tire. It was one of those frame jarring hits. DAMN. Roads around Boston are SH.

I only have 17's, but a 19 would have been Facked beyond recognition with a bump like that.... Good luck and heads up out there

I have 19's an live in Boston. I just clipped a curb today on my back right wheel and it took a BIG chunk out of my rim and sidewall. Will be posting pics soon..but I think I ruined the wheel. 19's look sick, but in retrospect, they are not practical for everday use.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I guess I have some thinking to do, but I've got time as I would want a spring '09 delivery to avoid winter! I guess I could try non-RFTs too, at least the tire would be a bit more forgiving if I do end up hitting a pothole...

I have the 19'' style 230 wheels on mine. Love them. Three words for you in your new 335i. BUY WHEEL INSURANCE.

FYI the rim size doesnt matter when you are looking at it filling the wheel well. 18, 19, 16 will all be the same size on the car.

Sure, I am aware that the OD of the wheel + tire will always be the same. I am just saying that a larger diameter rim has the effect of "filling the arches" more.

depending on the wheel, even 19s look smallish on e92, especially if the wheels have dish

so, for sure, 19s!

Not really true. The larger profile tires will have more "black space" and look to fill it more. Most people can't tell 18/19 just from looking. It's .5 inches difference on a side of the wheel. I had 20s on my last car and people always thought they were 19s.

Dude, I can tell you from experience, go with more sidewall on your tires. My dad has 18s and the roads out here are crappola. He's had to replace his rims 3 times thanks to the potholes. I, on the other hand, avoid them like the plague. Even though I only have 17s, I still don't want to hit them cause the rims are wayy to expensive to replace. I let my sister drive my car once, and she ploughed into one at like 40 mph, enough to put a bend in the tire! Imagine what that would have done if the sidewall was smaller. (She was responsible for bending one of my dad rims as well).

I agree. However, by not getting 19"s I avoided the legendary delay that a lot of M3 owners have faced due to a shortage of 19" wheels. I can always buy a decent set of aftermarket wheels when the time comes

if you stil wanna go with 19, like someone said above, avoid em like plague and make sure you get runflats and fill em with highest recomended psi pressure
