I have a 335 x drive. Just swapped on my winter wheels (vmr vb3 18 with Dunlop sport winters). No issues with the Chicago winters. Love it.

that looks like a super slushy mess, i could see it getting stuck in that. If its the michelin alpin pa3's or another performance winter tire, they arent great in deeper snow, better for light dustings.

To answer the original question the x1 28i with M-sport package is a pretty good ride.
There are a number of comparable vehicles for cheaper, but for what it is, a semi-luxury, all-wheel drive, somewhat sporty hatchback, it's not bad. I cannot emphasize enough the need for the M-sport package if sporty handling around twisty roads is a thing you value. Is it worth the $44k we paid for my wife's X1? Not sure, I probably would have went with either the new Subaru crosstek, or the mazda CX5. Both very similar in form and function, and fully loaded for around $30k. |

I grew up driving RWD in the winter with AS tires, we had never heard of snow tires. EVERYONE had RWD and driving in snow was not a big deal. To this day I HAVE to drive a Crown Vic at work in all weather thrown at me with crappy Goodyear RSA tires and I don't get stuck in the snow. However, the wife drives a Touareg so I don't have to worry about her getting stuck. I haven't heard any real complaints from XI drivers. If one suits you, buy it. The system seems pretty solid and if that lets you travel more confidently, by all means.

Had a really light dusting (~ 1") this morning, but had ice underneath it. Currently have the original EO Bridgestone Turanza AS on, with plans to replace them this or next week. That said, although they were slippery as can be on ice, x-drive was remarkable in its ability to get moving on ice that I could barely come to a stop on. Impressed with the car's all wheel drive and stability control, if not the tires themselves.
Coming from a front wheel drive Chevy Prizm, the ability to get moving on worn tires in poor conditions is impressive. |
