DVD stop seeing disc

I have a 2008 335xi, Sept 2007 build.
the Nav started to stop playing at times. Now it won't see ANY disc.
I've put old Nav DVD', 2012 and 2011, but still says to put in a disc.

How serious, and where to get it fixed?

Thanks for your knowledgeable inputs.

Although I have the new Nav CIC system in my 2011, same thing happened.

Sporadic DVD in drive recognition, swapping different retail discs did not fix problem.

Eventually the entire head unit had to be ordered and replaced.

Considering the car only had around 6,000 km when it first appeared, it was a rare occurrence. Mind you my car had been in a front end collision with $35k damage prior to the DVD drive problem.

There could be dirt or dust on the laser. At your own risk, you could try a DVD cleaner disk.

If it is a drive failure, then you have to order a new drive or possibly swap it with one from an auto wrecker.

Good luck!

Just to chip in, after I'd done a few forum searches here and a few other BMW forums it has been a common fault and with the DIY guide a simple and easy fix.

Started a topic on it yesterday actually!

Fitted mine today, took an hour!! Had to try and find an awfully small torx bit which added a little time onto it but was simple enough.

Follow that DIY guide and you'll be fine! So thanks to the User "Mud" for that!

I had this same problem; however, it turned out the DVD player was good, but the firmware had to be upgraded to be able to read the new disks.

How did you upgrade the firmware? I have the same problem where none of the DVD's are working in my car so far, but I don't want to replace the drive if all it needs is a firmware update.
