Two posts and he decides to be Detective Andy. Welcome Nidfbi335.
It is not good because even if you have no intention of watching it yourself, you might find yourself distracted.

You and I both know that if an accident occured because of Super Troopers you would then join the guy in his car to watch the movie until the police arrived.

+1. I want to respond to some of this. My wife watches DVD's every single time we go on a long drive and I do not look, nor have I ever been tempted to look at the screen. I just listen to it on the audio system of the car. I certainly COULD watch the screen on her lap if I desired.

I am a person that could eat a hamburger, hold a drink, talk on the phone, and listen to a DVD and still outdrive any of you POST POLICE that love manufacturers ruling over your every move because you are so mentally challenged. And yes, scrolling through menus on your i-Drive is just as distracting as what I am talking about and nobody gives a damn about that.

Now this unlocking the DVD while driving would be a way to have the player integrated into the car without a separate player and would be just as easily seen as something on the passenger's lap.

So if you want to contribute, stay on post. Otherwise shove your post police badge up your a$$.

I don't give a damn what the police think. If I am breaking some law then we will talk about that in court but they "take kindly" to is meaningless.

While it doesn't bother me if you have a DVD playing so that a driver car see it, we have established its similar to talking on the phone. There have been many studies over the recent years that have made correlations between talking on the phone while driving and driving drunk. Your reaction time is slowed, alertness affected, etc etc. So, if having the DVD visible is like talking on the phone, then by similar argument it could be like your driving drunk (depending on the driver). I say unlock it since in many states driving and talking on the phone isn't illegal and plenty of people get into accidents because of that.

This subject was beat to death a few years ago on a Mercedes forum when it became known that the HU on the E Class was DVD and MP3 capable in most markets and it had a secret menu that could enable DVD playback in motion as well as allowing region code free playback in any international format (NTSC and PAL with most sub variants). As near as I could tell, only W211 models built late in 2003 and some 2004 builds for the USA market could do this while all USA versions that did have the DVD and MP3 hardware had it disabled in the secret menu. The DVD playback and MP3 features were offered in the EU as an optional extra although it seemed every EU version had the hardware built in allowing the dealers to enable it for a "fee".
Since DVD in motion playback is illegal in almost every country following EU rules and also illegal in North America Mercedes quickly sent out a firmware update that killed the secret menu and removed the DVD and MP3 hardware from all future USA models just to make sure nobody here would be able to play a DVD anytime. On EU models DVD in motion playback was enabled only for the optional rear display screen.

I do believe this is incorrect.

There is not yet a way to play DVDs on the new iDrive while in motion. This is because the screen is not only controlled by the parking brake, but it is linked to the speedometer, and traveling a speed over 2mph will make the screen go blank. Some company is currently working on it.

On the old iDrive, yes it is definitely possible.

Those who say it can't be unlocked, you're wrong.

Here's how it's done:

1. Speed needs to be above 125. I know it sucks, but you have to do it anyway. Keep in mind you need to do this on a road with no traffic, preferrably in the boondocks with trees lining either side of the road.
2. To access the secret menu, you need to do two important things at the same time. Engage e-brake to highest setting and turn wheel all the way to the left.
3. The rest is self-explanatory.

OR, dialing a number on the idrive, or entering in a complete address which takes seeing and divides your attention. I listen to NPR every day. They discuss thought provoking topics that takes some thought. Just as a conversation with someone in the car with you. So, your never giving the road your undivided attention.

My point is, why blank the screen for a movie while they display a screen that you have to actually read and interact with. Dunno about you, but I don't have to think much listening to a movie. It takes more brainpower to navigate through idrive menus and entering data.

At any rate, playing the DVD would be more for my passengers than me.
