Hi Guys,

I need some advice please.

You can see from the picture that I have a chip - it's in the MOT failure area, but might just be within the 10mm limit to allow a pass. (not measured it yet).

However, I arranged a repair anyway (I didn't know about the 10mm thing at the time), and National Windscreens came yesterday. The Picture is after the repair.

Now, in my opinion, it doesn't really look any better than before, and, it's not even flush when I run my finger over it.

I know that not all chips can be repaired, but shouldn't they be smooth to the touch at the very least?

I'm now not sure what to do because the wife signed off the work but it was getting dark when she inspected it, plus our daughter was in the house so she didn't want to spend ages out the front inspecting the work in detail... plus, she's 'a girl' and doesn't really know about this stuff anyway (her words).

Should I be following this up, or should I accept that this may not be repairable and hope for the best at MOT time?

If I end up needing a new screen then I'm defiantly going to try and claim my £25 back for this repair. I really don't want a new screen though as I'm convinced it will go wrong and leave me with damage and/or non-functioning auto wipers!

I had mine repaired in December. It looked just like yours before the repair and is almost invisable after. Did you see the bloke do anything?

Unfortunately I was at work and the good lady was there, but she didn't watch them actually do the work.

I've had a chip done before, and like you say, it almost vanished. But if they tell me "sorry, not all chips can be done" then I don't really have the knowledge to argue differently.

When I took mine in for repair Autoglass said it needed a new screen. National Windscreens said it had a good change of repair, but couldn't guarantee it. I ask them to go ahead. So far so good.

A give away sign is a sucker mark on the inside, mine showed up when the screen misted up

Who did yours Ian as my R26 windscreen needs one doing?

Just called Autoglass and they quoted my £88.00 without going through my insurance.

If my insurance covers windscreen damage / repair would it effect my premium?

No it won't increase your premium. I does go on your policy as a marker though and some companies see it as a claim.

Not always the case, i repair screen for a living, and don't always use a mirror on the inside so doesn't leave the tell tail sucker mark


Ref OP - thats a poor effort of a repair !
Even without seeing that fresh prior to the NW attempt, i'm confident in saying that it would have repair to a good standard

In the picture you've posted, you can clearly see there is no resin in the legs of the chip

It could have cosmetically looks allot better, structurally, there won't be any strength in that chip as there isn't any resin in the legs to hold it

I thought you need a sucker on both sides when pressurising the resin?

I stand corrected and bow to you superior knowledge.

Out of interest, why wouldn't you place something on both sides?

You can put a sucker with a pressure point on it and gently open up the chip/crack, but in most repair cases this isn't needed

I only put a mirror on some job on the in side of the screen to line up my injector over the damages entrance
I also use the mirror to see that the resin has got to all area's of the chip

But like i say, not always needed, it depends on the type of damage on the screen

In the OP's case, personally i wouldn't have need to venture into the inside of the vehicle other than to visually confirm the repair was going as planned
Different repairers have differing techniques - but you can apply general rules

The picture shows a break with virtually no effort to penetrate the 'legs'.

It's a big subject within the industry. There is an alarming number of repairers out there (generally tend to be the replacement companies sending out idiots who don't give a Tom).

£25.00: was that what you paid or was it a contribution towards the bill (insco). There might still be a chance to repair it, but in terms of the finish, you have a very strong case for complaint.

I'm guessing it in the windscreen company’s favour either way. They get paid for a repair and if that goes wrong, they get paid to replace it. Strange how so many are going out of business.

The repairer has a duty to carry out a repair not only to spec, but to a cosmetically acceptable standard.

I know inscos take a very unforgiving and unwavering view on moody repairs.
