BMW said the kit ups the power from 306hp to 326hp (at least in Europe), so they said +20hp at the crank.
And now I have obtained 294whp (+23whp, so about ~27 at the crank), BUT I have also obtained 297whp (+26whp, so about 30 at the crank) with the Helene filter, which is a simple drop-in. I am not sure if the increase in power was because of the Helene filter or because it was the second run (first run was stock). I didn't wanto to spend yet more money on a 3-rd run with stock filter, but I think I should Here's a crappy iPhone 3Gs picture of the graph (first) and stock vs Helene (second picture). The fact that the "Helene" run has a bit more torque and power at all RPMs and not only on top RPMs makes me believe that the 297whp (+26whp) is also achievable with the stock filter. EDIT: I replaced iPhone pics with scans.

Seems like the kit is doing everything it said it would do. I have MSD80 so the power:dollar ratio and extra cooling is not worth the cost for me personally.
Thanks for the valuable info and I am glad you are enjoying it

it seems the torque under 4K is the same as stock.
Do you feel this? is the car pulling better than stock only after 4K In any case it is doing what BMW states, so it is fine! |

To be honest I feel it significantly better but maybe its just because of the lag reduction that I now feel compared to stock.

Well done!!!
I am inspired...definetely interested in this. Can you tell us more about the software? I understand that the software is to tune the new hardware and update the ECU/DME. But is it really a POWER tune as we thought it would be? Isn' t the tune (increase in power) just due to hardware install..? I hope my question is clear. The 26hp increase due to new hardware is great but NOT enough compared with "performance tunes" out there. I want the hardware for sure and it will go well with my other hardware mods - intercooler/exhaust/Dps/intake - But i also want a tune that can hike the boost considerably. I might have to consider a special flash or JB tune on top of the BMW software.

We need the boost data. That will be interesting.

Its the MT kit which is 430Nm instead of 450Nm for the steptronic.

Oh, and by the way, some more observations: my girlfriend (no cars knowledge whatsoever) which had the change to stay in the passenger seat today immediately noticed that the car feels "lighter" and is "more aggressive". Previously she said that the car felt a bit heavy. She said she clearly notices the difference. The throttle indeed seems more aggressive, and together with the almost elimination of turbo lag makes for a very nice ride Oil temperatures are lower, I mean the runtime oil temperature is the same (about 110 Celsius) but when driving (slowly) for an hour in heavy traffic (at 32 Celsius outside temp, so pretty hot) the temp did not reach 120 Celsius like usual, it remained at 110. About the fuel consumption, I have mixed feelings. I think the fuel consumption is higher (lower mpg). I mean, I can obtain the same mileage as before but as long as I push the pedal the car takes up more fuel than before. However, take this with a grain of salt, because since I had the kit installed I have gone from WOT to WOT, its not really a real world scenario When I try to drive super economically, I can obtain a better fuel consumption than when I tried to drive economically before. But when I drive normally the fuel consumption is worse. So push the pedal gently and you will be happy All these observations suggest a more aggressive throttle response from this engine software, that's why I have to be more careful with the pedal than before. thanks for the early look at this option.
Looks like it is doing what BMW said it would. extra cooling capacity for extended hard driving and 25 or so more HP. Any increase in boost noticed while you were doing the dyno?

We did not measure the boost, but I certainly think it peaks higher OR it fades slower than before as the RPM goes up.

Did you go for an official power kit that's expensive and relatively weak for the warranty aspect? If so, why then did you use an aftermarket filter on it?

I only used the aftermarket filter for testing, because I had in my trunk sitting there and I was really curious The filter is a drop-in, so (if I use it) I don't think I will have the warranty voided altough there could be a theoretical possibility. I believe that the same results (+4hp more) could be obtained on another run with the stock filter.

This would make for a fantastic ZMP/Msport package, esp. w/ DCT next spring. Absolute S4 killer.

cstavaru,
Thank you. The dyno sheet tells me this is exactly what I am looking for. I have been very unhappy with the torque and power in the higher range (5k-redline). My P-cars were very responsive up here, and the E93 is a slug. The effort for these posts is most appreciated. Cheers!

Good write-up cstavaru.
Regarding low grip on 2nd, what is the rear tyre dimension? Even with 255/40/17, which is not very wide, this should not be a big problem, or are you running 225's ? |
