is this cable only used on 2009+ idrive systems? i purchased my 08 e90 used and didn't have one of these cables.. did they come with 08s? do i need this cable for full ipod control with the idrive (and not get f01 f02 f03 etc).

If you have a USB port in your arm rest next to the AUX in (6FL option), then yes, you can use this cable and get full control of your iPod. If you don't have a USB port in your armrest, then this cable will do nothing for you.
