Why are all the Shell stations closing?

I don't think its just round my way, but Shell petrol stations seems to be dropping like flies.

Now I've got a car that really needs to be run on V-Power, I thought I wouldn't have trouble finding any.

There used to be 4 Shell stations around where I live and now there is just 1 way out in the sticks. They're not being sold for development land either, it seems they are being turned into shoddy 'no brand' economy fuel setups - not somewhere I would buy fuel from...

I travel all over the country and I noticed a lot of the Shell stations are going.

Given that on this and many other car forums I browse, it seems universally acknowledged that Shell is the best fuel and many people specifically buy it - why are they closing down?

I'm hoping Marlborough road re-opens. Highworth is a trek and prices are high.

I've been using tesco momentum 99 with good results.

Yeah, although now I think about it - I stopped going to that one after they were cloning people's credit cards. I knew at least 3 people that got done by them.

The petrol stations will be franchises.

The owners will be moving away to make more profit.

Most people don't care about what fuel they use.

Its all about who sells them the cheapest fuel, thats why so many main brand stations are becoming unknown brands, puts me off for sure but as Kerr says 95% of fuel buyers just want either the cheapest or handiest.

Well it must be a massive cost difference for them.... The refurb costs when they switch must be into the tens of thousands...

The main one in Swindon was always busy, now whenever I pass its empty, I hope they are regretting their decision

I don't think it is purely down to the cost of the petrol.

The franchise deals means they have to stock their shops with products Shell approve and probably don't get them as cheeply as they could elsewhere.

Up here Shell are cheapest and it's the shitholes like Murco that rip one off - I wouldn't touch one with someone elses herpes dripping cock either.

That said, BP Ultimate or ESSO's premium are ok. Maybe not as good as V-Power but alright nonetheless!

I used the Shell in Oswestry for all my fuel until it closed for a refurb then I started using BP instead.

BP Ultimate diesel actually runs a lot better in my car, I don't think I will go back to VPower.

To the OP, have you tried BP Ultimate? My 330d runs much better on Ultimate than anything else I've tried and most people who have 6 cylinder diesels say the same. I tried V-Power diesel once in my 330d and couldnt tell any difference, unlike Ultimate.
I get mine from the BP garage near Jn 16 M4, Blagrove, but its a bit pricey there. I think the Gypsy Lane BP may do it there too.

I had to put some shite Morrison's stuff in it last week as I was on holiday in Devon.

I'm talking about my 'other' car that I need V-Power for, not my BMW. Its a Jap Import Impreza.

BP ultimate in the petrol variant is only 97 RON and is poorly rated by all the specialists.
V-Power and Tesco99 are the only fuel that are 'safe' to put in the car according to 'the experts' !

As for my 335d - doing 25k+ miles/year....trust me - whatever's cheapest goes in!

I''d have to say I've seen the exact opposite to what the OP is reporting. At least 2 of my local no-names have been converted to Shell stations in the last couple of months including my local one which is only half a mile down the road from me.

Good news for me as it means I can keep my 335i running on the good stuff likes it deserves, strict diet of V-Power for me thanks.

Whatever you do don't put BP Ultimate in your Scooby. I tried in mine once (UK Car) and it ran terrible!! I made the same mistake filling the Beemer on the way to Silverstone and it instantly threw a limp mode and Engine light. No amount of restarts got rid of it so had to limp around for 3/4 of a tank. Funnily enough all was well as soon as I filled it with V-Power.

In my area there is loads of shells stations and they have refurbish them all now.

Maybe the shell near you isn't making much money or it could be that they are refurbishing the shell station.

I think I have seen the opposite to be honest, I have seen more open or the shells are getting refurbished
