A little preview

BBS CH-R brilliant silver, 8,5*19 ET32 + 9,5*19 ET35 (+10mm spacers per side) with the Conti 5P in 235/35R19 + 265/30R19.

The tire is good in dry and wet, comfort is excellent. For best grip i run with 2,2 bar pressure (~32PSI) when the tire is normal warm. If the pressure is over ~2,4Bar (~35PSI) the handling is a little bit intransparent.

Greetings

Fatman

Why am I getting a really loud droning noise inside the cabin with mine then?

Starts at about 15mph and is there allthe way up to 70ish where wind/road noise drowns it out.

Switch back to my old RFT's and the noise is gone.

Surely it cant be tyre noise given that no one else is complaining?

Perhaps the wider rubber is causing a mechanical component (wheel bearing??) to be stressed and make a noise?

Thoughts anyone?

No droning noise with mine either, sorry Did they definitely fit them the right way around? What pressures are you running?

Yes, definately the right way around!

Currently running 37 front 40 rear. Have tried all sorts of pressures to address road comfort, all values I have tried drone but perhaps more so at the pressure I'm at now.

Where have you set yours?

I'm at 36/38, but I'm on 18" wheels, so perhaps not directly comparable. I haven't done huge miles since I had mine fitted; maybe I just haven't worn mine to the point where they're noisy? Hope it's not that though.

Yves, I've just had 19 inch 5P Conti's fitted on my 230 style rims.

Can't say I've noticed any droning, although I'd say the tyre noise is much the same as my Bridgestone runflats.
I'm running 37 front 39 rear and the ride feels about the same as the RFT's to be honest.

I may drop the pressures a bit - so far I haven't experienced the "Wow! This is way better than RFT's!" effect that others seem so excited about.

I did notice the £838 cost for 4 tyres though! Perhaps I should have gone for the £500 Falkens? Ah well, no-one said a 335 would be cheap to run.

Mike.

Hi Mike, interesting obs.

I find the Contis to be way, way better in all respects than the Bridgestone RFT's. The wet weather grip is night and day better, especially combined with my Quaiffe diff.

Much more compliant on the road too.

Cheers

Yves

After more than 1000 miles since switching to these tyres I have to say that I'm not as impressed as I expected I would be. Maybe I expected too much but I have to say the car felt a little more 'precise' and 'edgy' with the rfts despite the crashy ride. I've gone from 17" wheels with rfts to 19" wheels and the contis so I had low expectations when it came to the ride improving anyway and although it felt at first that this combo was better I'm starting to think its probably about the same, ie no improvement.

What I have noticed is overall grip. My rfts were in excellent condition, they had 7mm of tread on each corner and no inside wear yet the dsc light was on all the time, especially in the wet. With the contis I haven't seen the light on once, the grip is amazing. The balance doesn't seem as good as before as the front grips and the rear feels a little light to the point it feel nervous so I might need to tinker with the pressures a bit (running 39 rear and 37 front).

Overall I'd say I was a little disappointed with what was £780 of hard earned cash being spent on something that has actually been little improvement on what I had before, especially as the rfts were in good order.

Oh well I've lived and learned.

well in my case there is no noise, try to use 36/39psi front/rear as E92FAN suggested

I would imagine that at 160kph the road and wind noise would drown out any tyre noise and it wouldnt be noticable

Ah, interesting you should mention the Quaife LSD; I'm seriously tempted by the Birds Dynamics package which includes this. £4k well spent, or OTT? Going off topic I know, but do you have any views on this? After all, there's likely to be a lot of poor weather over the next six months no doubt.

I'm surprised that the ride quality and general tyre compliance is not that noticeble, compared to the rfts.

I'm shortly to change like you've done.

Rich, yeah I'm a little peeved, but have only done a few miles so far; also I'll drop the pressures to, say, 35/37 and see if that makes a difference.

Maybe it is just raised expectations after some of the rave reviews I'd read.

I've dropped the pressures to attempt to improve the ride quality and although there was a slight improvement there was a bigger negative impact on the cars cornering ability with it feeling sloppy and poor turn in.It also seemed to wallow over crests in the road and motorway driving suffered with more vibration through the wheel for some reason.

I went down to 34 fronts, 36 rears when this happened and I just didn't like it. I sacrificed ride for handling because I just couldn't cope with that setup.

This is exactly my experience too.

The lower the pressure, the worse things get overall.

I'm trying out 32/35 this morning to see if the droning noise is pressure related. I can already feel the heavy stodgy feeling of the car just reversing it out of the garage!!

Will report back shortly.
