Performance BMW exhaust installed (Pics/Vid Included)

Well I am pleased to say I am on my way to modding my E90. I have owned the car since December 4th, 2009 and the journey has begun. My wife almost killed me when she saw that I spent over 3k on this car so far. Well the last mod is being installed this Saturday. I need to start paying off the credit card and save some money this time. I am sure you can all relate that when you get something new you want to change it up a bit. I have many more ideas but it takes $$$ which I am running out of at this time.

I went to my muffler shop last night (Mike's Muffler) in El Monte 1 hour before closing. They were going to install the exhaust after they finished up a weld on a MBZ. The owners of that car did not like the sound when they were done so he told them to cut off some resonator in the mid-pipe and make it a straight pipe to the muffler. Due to this I was aced out yesterday and will need to go back. Bummer!!! I do need to add that the exhaust on the MBZ sounded excellent to me. Don't know why he needed it louder.

For those of you who attend the event in OC on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month I will see you there next week on the 18th. I also look forward to meeting new people at LTBMW's event on the 20th.

Update:

I could not wait until Saturday to get this installed so I just got it installed an hour and a half ago. Only drove about 10 miles on it. Sounded real quiet when idle. Driving inside the car it does not sound much different. When I put the car in neutral and romped on it the car comes to life. Wow what a different. I cant tell if I like it or not but you normally will not be jumping on it in neutral. I think it is fine though. It kind of looks like the tips are out a little further than the original. Not sure if it comes out too much however everything lined up perfectly with the hangers under the car. So I imagine it is correct.

I do not know how to post pictures on here otherwise I would put some up. If someone wants to tell me how to upload pictures to this post I will do so.

Once I get someone with a video recorder I will get some sound clips and post it on youtube. This may be a week or so though.

Congrats on the BMW Performance Exhaust! It will get a little louder after about a month or around 500 miles. The tips look like they're positioned correctly. This has been my favorite mod - I enjoy it every time I drive!

Thanks mtechnik3. I just took it out and put 60 miles on it. Can't wait to break it in. Definatly sounds nice right now. Can't wait to hear it next month.

brokemywallet - Mine is a two into one straight pipe from the cat back. I am sure everyone with the performance bmw exhaust has that. There was a resonator on the original that has been removed on the new mid-pipe.

P.S. I thoght BMW stood for "Broke Mans Wheels"

I have not heard any pop or gurggling yet. Only put about 60 miles on it tonight. It is not a daily driver so it will take a few weeks to break in. Thought I was driving an M3 earlier,

Nice job. The tips look about right. Can't wait to hear it on Saturday or maybe tomorrow. I have some stuff to do during the day but I'm free in the evening.

I need to find someone local with a BMW Performance exhaust. It sounds too loud for my taste from all of the youtube videos, but people say it is quieter than they thought it would be.

BlindGoldfish - To tell you the truth at this point (not broken in yet) it is not as loud as I anticipated. At this point I am pleased as my wife said if it is too loud she will never go in it

It really does sound good from the inside. I do not know what it sounds like from the outside while driving at this point. I will have someone drive it down the street for me this week. If I put it in neutral and romp on it the exhaust is pretty loud. I am sure this will make a slight difference but I have an AT. I know, I know should have done a MT. I got it so my wife can drive it from time to time but she refuses to drive it. Says it is not her car. Maybe better in the long run!

evilpixel -At this point I am free tonight and anytime tomorrow. Just give me a call and I will come over or we will meet up. Don't forget about Thursday in Cerritos and next Saturday at LTBMW.

Look at the rear side picture of my exhaust. Does it look weird to you? A few of my friends say it sticks out way too far. If we cut the mid-pipes any more to push the exhaust in further then the hangers would not line up.

Thanks guys,

You could probably have a shop lop some of the non-chrome pipe of the exhaust tip. That might tuck it closer to the original look. I don't think it looks bad this way, but I would probably have mine shortened.

Congrats. This is one mod that I've been debating for months now. Many here will attest to that

I too don't like how the tips sit....especially for an OEM exhaust. I LOVE the sound though. After reading and discussing this topic with many other members, I've come to 2 conclusions regarding the tip placement:

1. BMW screwed up; ie., design flaw.
2. BMW purposely set the tips out farther b/c the tips can get really hot and cause potential "melting" issues with the rear bumper.

Either way, you can get aftermarket tips (Dimisa or Cyba) to help out with the overall positioning of the tips.

Okay so here it is. I ended up an hated the tips how they stuck out so much. Last night I was squeezing behind the car and the garage and hit my leg against the tips. My friend exilpixel mentioned where they can cut to shorten it so back to the muffler shop I went at 3:00 PM today. I am 100% happy now. It looks way better. My muffler guy took about 1" off each side and gave it a very slight tilt up. I used evilpixel's factory exhaust as reference. I will post two pictures now, a little dark but you can tell the difference. I will post new ones in the morning. evilpixel and I are going to try and get a few sound clips tomorrow.
